Detroit might not be the only city that sinks into bankruptcy this year if the economic storm that is prophesied to sweep across the nation lives up to its billing. Recent estimates place 48 states in an at-risk status, with Illinois the odds-on favorite to topple first.

So it may be that the noble effort to save the Motor City has come too late. It’s of little consequence, no doubt, that Detroit would be spared the ignominy of going down in history as the solitary failed city. Instead, it will be known as the first of many to have fallen. Presently, Detroit has suffered a 60-percent drop in factories and a nearly 90-percent reduction in its workforce from 1960 levels. The staggering impact of those numbers on the local economy doesn’t take into consideration the loss of industry-related jobs and of secondary businesses that spring up around major employment facilities.

What happened to the auto industry in 2009 could not have come as a surprise, given the kind of numbers floating around even as far back as 1993.

At that time, a New York Times article entitled “Retirees Figure Big in Detroit Math” reported that in 1950, a company like Ford had 62 active workers per retiree. Just over 40 years later, the ratio had dwindled to 1.2 workers per retiree.

Is it just me or is Detroit a perfect locale to set up a libertarian city on the cheap? You can buy houses for a dollar. The gun laws (if you care) are shall issue, so theres little hassle. A few hundred libertarians could buy some adjacent property and put together Konkin City or Bastiatville. Patrol the streets at night with militias and we have our dreams realized.

It's just you. Property taxes are too high, and the whole city council is corrupt. My concept of utopia doesn't include gang wars.

I'd actually contemplated looking into Detroit....until I saw the property taxes. The local gov't is out of their mind, and a very large group of people would have to have a solid plan to get rid of them, along with heavy policing of their neighborhoods. I don't know many folks who'd go for that. I sure wouldn't unless a lot of people were solidly committed to it.

Detroit is a "Canary in the coal mine". I think that folks need to be watching the History being made in Egypt
Then watch the videos in these threads in that light,

It would never work... I grew up in Detroit between 7&8 Mile off Woodward in Palmer Woods, one of the last exclusive neighborhoods inside Detroit. The ex-mayor of Detroit Kwame Kilpatrick was a goofy preppy kid who thought his shi# didn't stink, my friends and I had it out on several occasions with him and his stuck up friends. Thing is we had 24/7 private security in our neighborhood patrolling the streets, if you left the comfort of our neighborhood, you took your life in your hands. Every once in a while kids from poorer neighborhoods would come to our neighborhood and cause trouble, I've been in more fights than I care to remember. I went there about 4 years ago, 7 or so mansions were abandon and ready to be torn down (Including Mitt Romney's childhood house). If the best neighborhood in Detroit, with the wealthiest residents can't make it, I doubt anyone can.

Back when the race riots occured in Detroit in the late 60's, the majority of the white population left the city and moved to the suburbs north of 8 mile. Except for Greektown, the casinos, and the stadium, Detroit has been essentially abandon, and a war zone, enter at your own risk.

Recently, I've heard rumors that Chinese owned companies are buying city blocks and neighborhoods in Detroit, a communist utopia is something I could envision for Detroit.

Miles and Miles of Neighborhoods that look just like this!

Thanks for the info--like I said, it's not on the table for me. And I don't think the Chinese have the first clue of what they're getting themselves in to if they try that. They'll have to import a heck of a lot of Chinese folks and push out the bad elements--not very easy.

It's hard for me to imagine just how bad Detroit really is, but it sounds hellish. What a shame.
