An administration official says Obama didn’t mention guns in his [SOTU] speech because of the omnipresent controversy surrounding the Second Amendment and gun control. Tuesday’s speech was designed to be more about the economy and how, as Obama repeated nine times, the U.S. could “win the future.”
But in the next two weeks, the White House will unveil a new gun-control effort in which it will urge Congress to strengthen current laws, which now allow some mentally unstable people, such as alleged Arizona shooter Jared Loughner, to obtain certain assault weapons, in some cases without even a background check.
Tuesday night after the speech, Obama adviser David Plouffe said to NBC News that the president would not let the moment after the Arizona shootings pass without pushing for some change in the law, to prevent another similar incident.

Never let a crises go to waste.....

Publicize Populist emotional legislation that makes the opposing parties appear evil. Anything to take powers away from the people and if you challenge them you're anti-everything and pro violence.

Obama, if anything, should of been pushing Mental Health assistance, but did you hear that? Nope Treating the symptom, not the cause once again.

Best course of action is to turn up the volume on the Agent Terry whistleblower case:

For newcomers, it’s about allegations by insiders whistleblowers from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives that bureau management is allowing guns to be transported across the border into Mexico and keeping the authorities there in the dark.

Notice " ... to prevent another similar incident .... " , So this means they are mentally deficient enough to think a law will prevent it ?? Or are they just typical low life evil commie dictators who want nobody but them armed ??

Oh they are doing this with good intentions I figure. And then somebody will realize that the guy who got diagnosed with depression once 6 years ago can be denied a gun, and the whole thing will spiral out of control.

Complete fail. There are already existing laws that would have prevented Loughner from purchasing a gun. The Sheriff and local Police failed at their job. More laws will not change that.

The gun store that sold to Loughner failed to exercise common sense judgment. More laws will not change that.

An employee at the first Walmart refused to sell bullets to him. He (or she) had common sense. Common sense can not be legislated. More laws will not change that.

That's it, probably with shades of the "Veterans Disarmament Act" thrown in for good measure.
