Senate Tea Party Caucus Meets For First Time

In a packed room of Tea Party activists, four Republican senators launched an official Senate Tea Party Caucus, a unique partisan entity in the chamber.

No other GOP senators have opted to join the group, though many profess support for the conservative movement. Freshman Republican, Sen. Ron Johnson of Wisconsin, who sprang from among its ranks to take down an incumbent Democrat, joined the caucus Thursday after addressing the gathering.

Johnson said he just decided Wednesday to join the Tea Party Caucus "The issues it stands for are important to me," he said. "Thank you for sending me some help," Tea Party darling Sen. Jim DeMint, R-S.C., beamed.

Sen. Jerry Moran was also in attendance but he has not decided if he wants to join.

At least two other newly elected GOP senators spoke at the meeting — Sens. Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) and Jerry Moran (R-Kan). Neither of them have joined the caucus yet, but Moran was a founding member of the House Tea Party Caucus.

Moran told The Ballot Box that he's still weighing membership in the Senate Tea Party Caucus and that he wants more information on how it differs from the Steering Committee, which DeMint already heads.

Yeah, but the tea party caucus in the House is useless, because it didn't include true tea partiers. Ron didn't even join. (But then, he has his own pipeline to what the tea party is thinking, he doesn't need to sit at a head table for updates.)

Let's see .... join the Republicans, who have help destroy our country, or join a new group that prides itself in fiscal responsibility, real tough decision.

Moran is my Senator, and he has a really good voting record on fiscal issues. On civil liberties issues he's been better than most Republicans as well as he voted against warentless wiretapping and the military commissions act.

They were joined by Sen. Jerry Moran (R-Kan.), who said he would be joining the caucus.

Half the stories I have read today say Johnson is in and Moran is out, the others say Moran is in, Johnson is out. I don't know what the deal is, but either way I guess the total is at 4. Politico and CNN both say Moran is in, so I guess I'll believe that.

I saw that video you posted with Moran talking at the end, and I don't think he's had that much attention in his life, from looking at him. I know he has to have won an election and everything, but he looked charged. I think he is joining.

He's definitely in and it looks like Johnson is out. That's what all the later articles have said. A few early reports were reporting it the other way around, but not anymore.

In congress, Moran has a conservative voting record. On abortion, he is pro-life and received a 100% rating from the Family Research Council. On gun rights, he received an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association. He opposed the 2010 health care reform bill and the Medicare reform package of 2003. He has opposed a timetable for military withdrawal from Iraq. He opposed No Child Left Behind. Moran has opposed environmental protection, earning a lifetime score of 9% from the League of Conservation Voters[8] and opposing carbon dioxide "cap and trade" legislation. He has opposed gay rights, receiving zeros in the last four scorecards from the Human Rights Campaign.[9][10][11][12]

In congress, Moran served on the agriculture, transportation and infrastructure, and veterans affairs committees.

some good, some bad. he actually went against Bush on a few things so not your typical GOPer

He also voted against the bailouts

"I am one of 17 members of Congress who voted against every bailout for Wall Street, numerous banks and American International Group (AIG), Inc. Congress voted to give these private entities government funds, and by doing this, we violated principles that we know work, principles of an economy."

Needs to be educated on national defense though.

Johnson is definitely NOT in at this time.

When members of the Senate's newly formed Tea Party Caucus met for the first time this week, Sen. Ron Johnson was not among them.

Johnson, R-Oshkosh, who embraces the goals and principles of the tea party movement, said Friday that it was not a snub. He didn't join, he said, because he wants to concentrate on building unity within GOP ranks.

"I've decided not to join the Tea Party Caucus at this point in time," Johnson said. "I want to put all my energy toward unifying the Republican Caucus."

So it stands at 4: Paul, Demint, Lee, Moran

Ron Johnson is a piece of shit, and very pro-war.

I would have voted for Feingold if I was in Wisconsin.

Me too, actually. He's the only Senator who voted against the patriot act the first time. I don't know enough about Johnson to know he is bad, but I wouldn't have wanted to throw away the only Senator in the Senate who near matched Ron's voting record for independence, even if he was on the other side of a lot of issues.

According to MRocked, Johnson said that wars should never be criticized in public.

If it is a Just war, there will be very little criticism. Johnson fails on that question.

Jerry Moran was painted as weak on national defense during the entire GOP primary. His opponent Todd Tiahrt even ran commercials claiming that Moran sympathized with terrorists. Moran had voted against some of Bush's anti terror policies like warrentless wiretapping and the Military Commissions Act, and that gave Tiahrt ammunition. I was so disgusted by all of that that I decided to vote for Moran. But Moran is certainly no neocon. Not even close.
