Republican Congressman from Texas, Ron Paul, says he is considering a run for the US Senate in 2012 after new polling data shows is among the top picks for the seat.

“I am certainly thinking about it,” Paul told The Hill, which asked him about his prospects after the left-leaning Public Policy Polling published a survey showing he is behind Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst (R) by only 3 percentage points for the seat.

The seat in question will be open in 2012, as incumbent Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison announced her retirement last week.

Despite getting heavy derision from establishment Republicans during his 2008 US Presidential bid for his views on economic and foreign policy, Paul continues to maintain a very strong base of support, especially among independents and conservatives. Paul won the CPAC Straw Poll last February, which was downplayed by neo-conservatives, and narrowly lost the straw poll at the Southern Republican Leadership Conference to Mitt Romney last April.

Paul’s grass-roots conservatism is considered to have laid the groundwork for the Tea Party movement, although some argue it was sparked by a rehearsed media moment on FOX News.

Although he has not made any firm commitments yet, Paul is also considering another run for the presidency in 2012; independent voters chose him over incumbent Barack Obama by 18 points in a hypothetical match-up between the two.

Paul’s son, Rand, just won his first term in the US Senate, representing Kentucky.
