Are these $500B in cuts over 10 years or in 1 year?

i think they take effect as soon as the legislation is passed. that's true at least for some of the cuts. From the Bill:

(5) REPEAL.—All accounts and programs of the Bureau of Indian Affairs are defunded effective on the date of enactment of this Act

so the answer i'm pretty confident is that the cuts occur within one year.

And the Republicans put up bailout-begging Paul Ryan to give the SOTU response???

Huge fail. Rand is a statesman.

Over eight months -- the remainder of the current budget year.

i think the house republicans should copy Rand's proposal and defund everything that Rand is proposing to defund. they have the power to do it.

I know they take effect this year, but politicians like to list savings over 10 year periods so they sound bigger. I shouldn't have suspected this of Rand. It looks like this is really $500B in one year, cutting the deficit in half.

Absolutely no chance. Republicans won't even support it. They would ban guns before they'd cut aid to Israel among a long list of complaints they'll have. And Democrats? Even less than that. Ron might propose something similar in the House, but even then, it won't pass. The only good thing about this is it will get national exposure and Rand has proven he's serious, unlike every single other supposed "Deficit Hawk."

It will push the eventual cuts bigger than they wanted them to be. Obama tried to sound fiscally conservative and came off as spendthrift, Ryan sounded pale, next to this.

I saw this on Twitter:
"Tea Party Express so embarrassed by #Bachmann video that they've replaced it by a Rand Paul speech!"

And, wouldn't you know it, Rand's response to the SOTU address is right there on the Tea Party Express homepage: http://www.teapartyexpress.org/stream/

Exactly right. I agree there's close to zero chance of Rand's Budget Reduction Act passing in anything like its current form, but it's moving the goalposts, widening the spectrum of the debate. Before, this, the compromise was essentially going to be between Democrats who want to raise spending by a few hundred billion dollars, and Republicans who maybe, possibly might consider planning $100 billion in cuts. Now that Rand has put forth a serious and fully-realized plan for a half-trillion dollars in cuts for FY2011, it moves the center of gravity of the debate much closer to real fiscal conservatism, and will, God willing, create room for a much more favorable compromise.

The reponses on that video are sickening. Someone needs to post his bill link on there to shut them up about specifics.

She got in trouble by making some comment about how our founding fathers got rid of slavery. Chris Matthews was just going crazy over that.

Paul Ryan said one of governments roles was to provide a safety net......and so I am like really? Is that so.....then he talks about the Constitution.
