View Full Version : A plea for a subforum -- Libertarian Parenting

I have searched high and low for a good forum to discuss parenting. Unfortunately 99% of them are full of women who are either socialists/hardcore liberals. I am currently a member of a birth board and I am very unpopular because of my views (which I tend to throw out there even when I know I will be bashed) Most of them act as though the government owes them something, that their maternity leave should be paid in full for 12 months etc.

Anyhow I would like to connect with other parents, who have freedom minded ideals, and have not been able to find that anywhere on the internet other than one which is in spanish.

So I was thinking maybe a parenting sub-forum could be set up, specifically for parents or pregnant families.

Please? :)

btw c4L's mission statement used to say something like:

Developing materials for homeschooling families, to help them educate their children in history, economics, and related fields.

I'm not a parent, but we are starting to talk about it. I would certainly like to become as prepared as possible before we take on that task.

My wife might join the forum if that happens... She posts on a couple of parenting boards and has the same problem. We have home births, we home school, don't vaccinate, and cloth diaper among other things which for some reason, 99% of people who do those things are tree hugging liberals... :(

Yes, I believe he's a supporter of the Montessori method (home schooled or not).

I enjoyed his monologue regarding aggressive parenting.

I don't know about any forums, but I found a really good read a while back on Libertarian parenting that goes extremely deep into the philosophy of it.

Stefan Molyneux believes there is no such thing as a "good parent" and typically instructs people to disown their families. I agree with him on many political levels but families and parenting I think hes a bit mental.

As for the other replies, YES those are the boards I am referring to. There was a thread earlier where a womans neighbor was smoking pot and the smell was bothering her. 19 of the 30 responses told her enthusiastically to dial 9-1-1. Another thread was about how Canada has 12 months paid maternity leave. The american women were aghast at how cruelly we are treated here in America having to PAY for healthcare. One quote said I don't know why you conservatives don't want us to be able to see the doctor. Another said healthcare should be a right, not a privilege. I just can't deal with these women anymore, but EVERY parenting forum I find is JUST like this. This is why I don't have any real female friends outside of the liberty movement.

Anyhow, I have been a member here a long time, I like most of you, and I know there are tons of parents here. I also know many of us have like minded ideals about freedom. I also know that I have very few places I can go to ask advice on certain issues, or share helpful tips etc. So a parenting subforum sounds like a perfect solution!

Molyneux has never said that. If you listen to his shows he says that you should leave abusive families and have nothing further to do with them and I wholeheartidly agree. I think parents should get out of the mindset of 'I own my child'. I think myself and Vessol having lived through different childhoods and coming to the same conclusion that if you want a healthy relationship then you must treat your child like a free individual. I know parents have the urge to want to mold their children, but I think that is a destructive mindset, and a non-libertarian one.

A fantastic idea, +rep when I get more ammo.

From birth to out on their own in the world...I like this idea.

Excellent subforum addition.

I have to say that I've never really taken much of an interest in parenting, honestly not being sure if I ever want to be one myself.

However, Molyneux definitely made me more interested in the subject as of late and sparked me to do my own research.

I think parenting and the children of our nation is incredibly important, probably the most important thing right now actually, not just something to worry about passing our debt to.

@Austrianeconprincipal: We recently started home schooling. However to be honest our technique is very unstructured and some hardcore home schoolers would call it unschooling. We are still trying to find our niche. :)

Sounds great. Perhaps you could have monthly updates or something just to let us perhaps future-to-be libertarian parents advice and what not. I am not sure if David Friedman wrote a book on it either, but I know Patri was unschooled and so were a lot of others in the libertarian community. Thanks.

Sure! My daughter has a blog that we update homeschool stuff every week or so, but haven't gotten around to it since sometime around Thanksgiving I think. We will try to catch up on it. http://nayjevin.com/livh20 (Click on the homeschool tab at the top)

I also posted a thread about parenting blogs in this sub-forum... most of the links I posted revolve around home school/unschooling

I could have used a libertarian forum about 12 yrs ago when my son got written up at school for refusing to stand for the Pledge of Allegience.
