Some 71 percent of those surveyed oppose increasing the borrowing authority, the focus of a brewing political battle over federal spending. Only 18 percent support an increase.

..

Only 24 percent say the country can afford to cut back on education spending, a likely Republican target, and 21 percent support cuts to law enforcement.

With the Pentagon fighting wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, 51 percent supported cutbacks to military spending.

Less than half, 45 percent, support an expected Republican effort to pare environmental enforcement.

Some 53 percent support cutting the budgets of financial regulators like the Securities and Exchange Commission, in spite of the widespread consensus that a lax regulatory atmosphere contributed to the devastating financial crisis of 2007-2009.

And 47 percent support cutbacks to national parks, which were shuttered for several weeks during the budget battles of 1995 and 1996.

Expensive benefit programs that account for nearly half of all federal spending enjoy widespread support, the poll found. Only 20 percent supported paring Social Security retirement benefits while a mere 23 supported cutbacks to the Medicare health-insurance program.

Some 73 percent support scaling back foreign aid and 65 percent support cutting back on tax collection.

"I'll vote to raise the debt ceiling. But only if we have an ironclad balanced budget rule that we attach to the debt ceiling," Sen. Rand Paul (R-KY) told "FOX News Sunday."

Another case of people wanting to control spending, but they don't want to cut anything. In other words, a meaningless poll. The debt ceiling will be raised even if 100% of those polled don't support it. This is a perfect example of why "education campaigns" are worthless. The opinions of the people don't count for anything, the only ones that matter are those voting on legislation.

QFT. We have to win to have any effect on policy. Although educational campaigns (Ron's first) can pull together and organize a Revolution, tangible benefits will ONLY be felt when that is channeled into electing liberty-minded people.

Well cutting foreign aid seems popular.

Some 73 percent support scaling back foreign aid and 65 percent support cutting back on tax collection.

And while that's a drop in the bucket, you gotta start somewhere.

75% wanted an audit of the Federal Reserve, though and all we got was a watered down version. The will of the people doesn't matter. And now that the Republicans are in charge of the House, expect many more Israel aid inserts added to bills.

Um cut it all not just military....seriously it does no good to simple move the chips around. I get really really frickin sick of hearing only one kind of cuts being talked about..because I know it's just a political sham. Cut X amount military then cut X amount welfare..meet in the middle.

Just goes to show that "widespread consensus" and "the truth" have nothing to do with one another.

This day, TWO YEARS AGO: Poll: 71% of Americans oppose raising debt ceiling, 51% support military cuts

Also that day?

Texas Republican Rep. Ron Paul, notorious for casting the sole vote against scores of House resolutions, will support Wednesday’s resolution to condemn Saturday’s shooting in Arizona and honor the victims.

“He supports the resolution,” Paul spokesman Rachel Mills told The Daily Caller in an email.

I find those numbers fascinating, because in order to cut spending significantly , you have to look at , not just foreign aid, military but also Soc Sec , Medica,USDA etc. .I cannot imagine even 40 % support for that ??
