He also said that he had disengaged his safety and was ready to take down the shooter if necessary.

Great interview!

Watching the first half of the video, before Joe appears, I couldn't escape thinking how Ed reminded me of Prothero programming the masses on V for Vendetta.

Interesting around 3:30 that he said he ordered someone ELSE holding a gun to drop it. Then people told him it was a different person.

This is how it happened:

He was buying a pack of smokes, heard shots mid finishing his transaction, put his arm inside his jacket and on the gun, clicked the safety off while already running outside. When he passed the corner he saw a man standing with a gun and another man and a woman wrestling with the gunman. He focused on the man with the gun, but as soon as he saw the gun, he saw that the slide was locked back and the gun cleared and obviously empty, so he removed his hand off of his gun and pinned the man holding the gun against the wall and told him to drop it. As soon as he did that everyone told him that the guy on the floor was the real gunman, so after he forced the man with the gun to drop it and told him to step on it instead, he helped with holding down the real gunman by leaning on his lower back and his feet until the cops came.

Just so everyone get's it right.

Oh and all of this happened super fast, probably within 15sec or so which is my guess by how he explained it.
