But the two presidential candidates disagree on a key foundation of any future draft: Mr. Obama supports a requirement for both men and women to register with the Selective Service, while Mr. McCain doesn't think women should have to register.

Also, Mr. Obama would consider officially opening combat positions to women. Mr. McCain would not.

I think that makes it official:

I, for one, would not want our women-folk to be killed and maimed in war. Regardless of the legitimacy of our wars, I believe that women should be shielded from the horrors of combat. At the very least, our modern society can give men at least one thing, just one, in which we can still feel like men.

If a woman wants to fight in a combat position, and she actually has the skill to do it (at the same level as a man), I'm not going to demean her and tell her she can't do it. I support allowing both men and women to be in positions of combat, but I do not support the draft.

More like she'll be drafted and not given a choice about combat or not.

Hey, I thought women supported "equal rights"? Or is that just for the things that are appealing?

the Paul solution is again the best-just abolish draft registration for everyone!

and McCain when he ran for the house wrote letters advocating a draft to counter the Soviet threat

Okay. A draft is bad regardless of who is being drafted. Hell, maybe this is better, it gives women "Equal Rights".

The real solution is for there to be no draft at all.

I'd one-up that and abolish the military (standing armies) along with the draft.

Time to make the military completely coed, barracks, showers and foxholes. This is the only way not to be hypocritical about equal right. I Don't agree with the draft but since it is the law we need to really make it fair with gays women and men all sharing barracks, showers, jobs and foxholes. The bodies that break under the load of certain tasks should just be discharged.

A country does not own its citizens.
And by "country" you really mean "government".

And last time I checked, this is in direct violation of the 13th Amendment.
