BEIJING – The first clear pictures of what appears to be a Chinese stealth fighter prototype have been published online, highlighting China's military buildup just days before U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates heads to Beijing to try to repair defense ties.

The photographs, published on several unofficial Chinese and foreign defense-related websites, appear to show a J-20 prototype making a high-speed taxi test—usually one of the last steps before an aircraft makes its first flight—according to experts on aviation and China's military.

The exact origin of the photographs is unclear, although they appear to have been taken by Chinese enthusiasts from the grounds of or around the Chengdu Aircraft Design Institute in western China, where the J-20 is in development. A few experts have suggested that the pictured aircraft is a mock-up, rather than a functioning prototype of a stealth fighter—so-called because it is designed to evade detection by radar and infrared sensors.

But many more experts say they believe the pictures and the aircraft are authentic, giving the strongest indication yet that Beijing is making faster-than-expected progress in developing a rival to the U.S. F-22—the world's only fully operational stealth fighter.

And so does the Russian stealth fighter.

Of course all this will be for naught once cell phone radar is perfected.

Well it shouldn't be a surprise. Our latest and greatest, the F-35 "joint strike fighters" was actually co developed with 4 other countries.

We share our best tech with the rest of the world as soon as we make it.

That's nice. A lot of that difference is on R&D and just plane fat. (Waste, fraud and abuse). I don't think you'll find anyone here arguing for spending any more money. But we've been operating for the past decade under the assumption of complete air superiority. That may be fading.

(pic omitted)

Yep - shows what an excellent return we're getting, considering we're spending seven times as much as a country that has the same geegaws we do.

Gee, I wonder where they stole the design from...

Actually, the pic is a fake. Note the "B" on the air field and "2001" on the aircraft. Don't ya know the Chinese always use latin script on their military airfields and aircraft? NOT!

Whoever photoshopped that image should have paid a little more attention to detail. A red star on the tail, does not a Chinese aircraft make.

The image angles are a tip off too - these photo's were staged.

A lot longer than that. And we will be for a long time. They cancelled further orders of the F-22 for a reason.

I'm sure china reports every bit of military spending, possibly as well as they report on issues in Tibet.

You are right , they do not . Military spending was the Chinese stimulus . Factories opened and people went to work.

Yeah. For the F-35. A plane that is shared with 4 other countries including Turkey. Your point?

Ah. Drone wars. Well stealth tech is important for drones too. Iran claims to have just shot two down. And they have drones of their own.

No, it ain't about drones. Different platforms, but if it flys, it dies.

Americas - USA » Reports: Israel Frozen out of F-35 Development

19-Apr-2005 08:10 UTC

F-35 Joint Strike Fighter

Israeli defense industry executives are reporting that the U.S. has frozen Israel out of the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter development of a program as punishment for its military cooperation with China, including its work on Harpy anti-radar attack UAVs acquired by China from state-owned Israel Aircraft Industries in 1994. Israeli Defense Ministry officials refused to confirm the report, noting only that they were in dialogue and hoped that “within its framework understandings will be reached soon.”

Unrelated, Obama has just received request for release of Israeli spy Pollard.

That is interesting, however, just because a self proclaimed international organization dictates a mandate does not mean every country will abide by it.

Secondly, this is a mandate for VERBAL English in order to communicate with the control tower.

Third, this applies to international COMMERCIAL flights, not military.
