"will you back the nominee if you aren't it" because they know we are a force to be reckoned with and that without us, they don't stand a chance of defeating the dem?

I think so Ms Doodahs. Most everyone who interviews him asks if he is going to run as a 3rd party.

I think they like to eat up his response time with it and they like to suggest to the audience that he won't win. It's an attack tactic.

It's a marginalizing question meant to make him look bad in front of straight party voters. If he doesn't back the party, he's not one of them.
