Yes! More Thomas Woods! I've been passing Meltdown and Nullification around to folks all of 2010. Way to bring in the new year Mr. Woods!

“Deregulation Caused the Financial Crisis”. Sick of that one? Me too. Here’s the quick note I sent someone who asked Professor Walter Block this very thing.

“I cover this in detail in my forthcoming (February 7) book Rollback. For now, I’d ask your friends for specific examples of deregulation that led to the present crisis. They can’t name one. There isn’t a repealed regulation that would have prevented the securitization of mortgages, or prevented banks from holding such securitized mortgages as investments. Banks were allowed to do this all along. If they cite the so-called repeal of Glass-Steagall they are even more clueless. The partial lifting of barriers between commercial and investment banking had exactly zero to do with the financial crisis. (Much more on this in my book.)

“Moreover, who could possibly look at banking and think this was a deregulated industry? Regulation is absolutely everywhere. No one seems willing to consider the possibility that regulation may simply have failed, that regulators may be human beings rather than demigods, etc. Walter is right: banking is the most heavily regulated industry in America. There are already 115 agencies regulating the U.S. financial sector. Your friends think things would improve if there were 116. They are stuck in an interventionist worldview they cannot break free of. The thought never occurs to them that the very institutions that are supposed to provide stability may be the sources of instability — beginning with the Federal Reserve. This story is told in my book Meltdown, which Walter recommended.”

I liked Meltdown but the words "Brooksley Born" and "derivatives" I'm pretty sure were never mentioned in that book. Hopefully Rollback (he's got a knack for 1 word title books doesn't he?) goes over those

Nice, can you give me the link? I've read Metldown, and I own Nullification, but I would like to listen to Nullification during one of my long drives.

The Brooksley Born/Derivatives story is a story that proves the opposite of what many people think it, it's not an argument for more government but with the fundamental purpose of looking for an answer to come out of washington. Also, this particular episode only dealt with rules and regs that might of enflamed the fire but did not cause it.

In Meltdown Tom Woods is trying to get on to the core of what CAUSED the crisis not the hundreds of factors that contributed to the magnitude.

For example, if I drop a match on a trail of gasoline, you can't blame the match or the gasoline on the fire but factors that lead to take the actions I did, and the major factor that lead to many of decisions made is risk dilution and easy money from government.

A book that talks about this as well as many of the the contributors to the magnitude is Financial Fiasco by Johan Nurmberg which is a pretty damn good book.

If you did a video on Born/Derivatives, I'd watch it!

Well we can never have too many Woods books. However, I am a little disappointed. I thought the book he was releasing this year was going to be an anti-war book. He said that he'd been studying war and it's effect on the economy, and how the military-industrial complex distorts our economy, even during times of peace.

He said he was discussing this material in a forthcoming book, but not that the whole book was about this.
