if shtf i would do this but in colorado it is illegal to catch the water!! i was thinking more along the lines of tarps under dirt and collecting water in a basin created to collect the water!!

Why is it illegal to catch rain water in Colorado?

i sell chemicals in 55 gallon plastic drums. we always have a bunch hangin around. the city comes and picks em up to use as trash barrels. rain water isnt really clean though. if you had some type of treatment system in your house i wouldnt see a problem with it. plus if you collect it in barrels like that over time bacteria would grow for certain. if youre using it for watering flowers or crops however its perfect. i mean its all about surface area. if youre going to collect from the roof to use for around the house kinda stuff its fine.

It is illegal to catch rainwater in Colorado unless you own water rights as well. The rain water belongs to someone else and must be allowed to flow to the stream or storm water drain.

I use my barrels for my garden. But if the stuff hit, I can use the water to flush my toilets or even drink if I clean it!

yeah flushing toilets is a good use for it... rig the barrel couple feet above the john somewheres. a 55 gallon drum can do a lot of flushes lol. 34 flushes to be almost exact lol.

You could also take your overflow and pipe it into another barrel or even a cistern :)

pretty much, they sure are not doing it to protect water rights though;) they always try to screw any water rights people have as well;)

the bottom line is the state intends to sell every drop;) so you better not take the water they own in the sky, Not to mention all the cloud seeding they do!

I can tell you if the shtf , i am shoveling snow and doing what i can to find drinking water or they can just shoot me!! Wolverines Co Mtns!!!

yeah i would have as many barrels as i could muster lol... they make tablets to drop in to kill bacteria... or shit just use a chlorine if youre gonna dedicate it to flushes. keep those pipes squeaky clean... dont use too much though cuz chlorine will eat up yellow metals (copper)

sun is bad and no movement is bad. so if you have water stored in a barrel you want to have it out of the sun as well as churning it once every few days. you can weld up a paddle thing to throw in your drill too too churn it. dont wanna have anything break in the barrel though lol

It is fine if you are just using it for your garden

You can also use silver coins as an anti-bacterial agent, and run the water to be used for drinking and cooking through a Berkey filter.

I read recently that since urine is sterile, and contains fixed nitrogen, there's little reason not to use it in compost. Urine also has well known uses in tanning. Not to mention the fact that it was a major source of non-industrially produced saltpeter... which might have some uses after a collapse.
So those 34 flushes should go farther.
