Plotkin then goes on to do a few more diagrams and teach folks a bit about how Venn diagrams are supposed to work -- which is totally worth checking out as well.

They say that if you have to deconstruct a joke, you've probably ruined it, but if that joke contains a Venn diagram, and that Venn diagram is wrong, but still becomes popular with people claiming it's an accurate Venn diagram, suddenly that deconstruction can be a lot funnier than the original. Kudos to Plotkin for breaking it down...

lol - read that follow-up a couple days ago. Plotkin submitted examples of correct ways to do it.

I noticed the original chart didn't look quite right when I read it - for a different reason; I've taken up to reading history lately, wondering why we're headed back to another dark ages, and noted that a lot of Mathematicians don't think too much of Venn - that he really doesn't deserve credit for Venn diagrams (the only thing he is known for).

I note that Venn quotes Francis Bacon, and that Bacon's inductive scientific method - from his book novum organum, or "new instrument"; is something Francis Bacon compares to being as a pair of compasses that when put in the hands of any beginner would enable him to draw perfect circles.

This is a good analogy to drawing logic circles, with what is different, what is similar, and to what degree. Venn probably was aware of this, as he mentions Bacon’s quote in his volume on Principles of Inductive Reasoning.

Edit: You would not believe in what unorganized files I put the above information. I organize stuff all the time..
