Man's penis amputated following misdiagnosis

The man, who is in his sixties, first visited a local clinic in Blekinge (http://www.thelocal.se/tag/blekinge) in southern Sweden in September 2009 for treatment of a urinary tract infection, the local Blekinge Läns Tidning (BLT) reported.

When he returned in March 2010 complaining of foreskin irritation, the doctor on duty at the time diagnosed the problem as a simple case of inflammation.

After three weeks passed without the prescribed treatment alleviating the man’s condition, he was instructed to seek further treatment at Blekinge Hospital.

But it took five months before he was able to schedule an appointment at the hospital.

When he finally met with doctors at the hospital, the man was informed he had cancer and his penis would have to be removed.

It remains unclear if the man would have been able to keep his penis had the cancer been detected sooner.

Well, if you would compare it to America, he might would have died in Cancer for being unable to afford the treatment.

So there you have it, the fascist health care in America vs. socialist health care in Sweden are bad after all. But considering the circumstances, I would rather choose the socialist system. If you have no money in America to treat yourself, you die. Besides, the quality of health care in Sweden is also much better.

You can't base your facts only on treatment. As if the free market never does mistakes - it will.

I do however believe a complete free market health care system, and sound money, would be the only solution to all our problems we have in health care today.

It isn't much of a choice; but personally I'd rather die of cancer than have them take off my perfectly functional penis.

This is simply not true.

My ex-wife had a heart attack last year. Largely her own fault, but that is another matter. She got excellent care. They got her to the hospital, did an angioplasty, installed a stent, and had her wide awake and feeling fine in the recover room within two hours. No insurance. Amount she paid: $0. The State (Arizona) paid the $50,000 bill.

I agree that government involvement in health care is the problem and getting it out entirely is the solution. But to say that under the existing system people who cannot afford health care just die is totally false.

Agreed. The bulk of the bills I run are for Medicaid and Charity, and this is for at-home therapy and nursing. These people take a lot of medicines --- and they're not paying for them, either. They are people who've lost limbs, are in vegetative states (but are at home rather than at a hospital), need help after a fracture or a joint replacement (which they also did not pay for) and so on.

I'm glad she made it!

Well you just answered your own question. The reason she got treatment was because the state paid for it. And besides, that's the kind of socialist system. In general, if people have serious ill problems and don't have the money to pay for it. They have no choice but to sacrifice, or sell their homes and then become poor. That's why the price levels in America is the greatest concern.

As a matter of fact, people are dying every day because they can't afford the treatment and as well as the medicines.

50 million are poor in America. That's 1 out of 6. Why do you think they're poor? Should I say it for you? "they can't afford anything"

How odd, then, that the people getting that free therapy and nursing at home... have homes in which to get that therapy and nursing, since they are dying in the streets.

Well you just answered your own question.

I didn't have a question, exept maybe what are you talking about?

The reason she got treatment was because the state paid for it."
Clearly so. And you said that in America, she would have just gone without care. So your statement was incorrect.

And besides, that's the kind of socialist system."

Yes, it certainly is and a major part of the reason health care costs are so high.

In general, if people have serious ill problems and don't have the money to pay for it. They have no choice but to sacrifice, or sell their homes and then become poor."

Just quoting the tv news or do you have actual stats?

That's why the price levels in America is the greatest concern.

Agreed. The problem with health care in this country is that government regulation and subsidy has driven prices to ridiculous levels.

As a matter of fact, people are dying every day because they can't afford the treatment and as well as the medicines."

Evidence of this?

Says who? The poorest American lives better than most of the rest of the world.
