These are not highly skilled or technical jobs but take a gander at how much they are paid:

At Avery Fisher Hall and Alice Tully Hall in Lincoln Center, the average stagehand salary and benefits package is $290,000 a year.

To repeat, that is the average compensation of all the workers who move musicians' chairs into place and hang lights, not the pay of the top five.

Across the plaza at the Metropolitan Opera, a spokesman said stagehands rarely broke into the top-five category. But a couple of years ago, one did. The props master, James Blumenfeld, got $334,000 at that time, including some vacation back pay.

Are they paid from taxpayer coffers? If not then I don't really care what they make but that is pretty extreme. Ill worry about it when the feds are bailing out that union on our dime.

if they use private funds I think it's great. better than having a bunch of War-Mart workers dependent on government handouts (food stamps, medicaid)

I HATE unions.

At the same time, a lot of that pay goes into union dues.

Also, I have hung theatrical lighting. It's a kinda dangerous profession. A fall can kill you!

I hate that you can not work in this area without being part of a union.

Also we are talking NYC here have you looked at rents????

Unions are not a horrible thing if: They are optional. They are not a public service union. They are company specific. Detroit is in such a mess because there was one union for all three main auto companies. Had there been three optional unions, things might have been different.

I am not a fan of unions at all. But in their current form, they might be doing more harm than Federal Gov. Spending.
