When police officers arrived at 13-year-old Masha's home, searched her room and inspected her computer, it was not because they suspected her of any crime.

Her offence was simply to be a devoted follower of the angst-ridden punk-rock subculture known as 'emo', in an ex-Soviet state where pressures to conform remain strong.


"It was offensive and frightening at the same time," said Masha, a schoolgirl in the Armenian capital, clearly upset by the experience.


Police in Yerevan have been conducting a campaign against the capital's small but controversial emo community since the recent suicides of two teenagers who were rumoured to have been emo fans.


They claim that the subculture represents a threat to young people's welfare.

It'd be sooo much easier (and probably less invasive) just to see if they're cutting in hidden locations. Those at risk and not just being assholes will cut on their stomach, feet, thighs, and other places where it won't be noticeable except for people looking. Tip for parents.

And stop picking on the damn emos, most of them are perfectly happy in their inner world with their friends and a lot of the girls are totally hot. They just have a problem with conformist society, but it's pretty much for similar reasons that we have a problem with society for conforming to what is shoved down our throat by the government and the media.

In other words kids don't always become emo because they are depressed about their lives, in fact a lot of times it is to fit in, because the style emo kids wear is pretty much what is popular right now, so is the indie rock.

I grew up listening to local hardcore music before emo was around. When I was growing up going to shows, there was no "scene", there was just a small segment of rejects like us who liked hardcore and punk music.

Emo is just another way for males to dress like females. Whatever floats their boat. As for music tastes, I always found the style lacking and extremely simplistic. Then again, I do listen to classically influenced black metal (symphonic/orchestral/ambient/etc.). Limbonic Art, Emperor, Enslavement of Beauty, Cor Scorpii, Windir, Arthemesia, Chthonic, Summoning, old Dimmu Borgir, Alghazanth, Catamenia, etc.

Well, the more people tyranny effects the more people reject the State. It is an odd dichotomy of sorts, but again, is nothing new hence the line in the Declaration of Independence.
