How does the concept of getting a $16,000, $18,000 or even a $75,000 phone bill strike you? Use your phone for Internet access? Maybe use it outside the US? BE AFRAID of your phone company!

Sigh....

This is called unjust enrichment. That's a legal term, because the Uniform Commercial Code already accounts for such things.
Most of these people would probably be well served by a certified letter stating that they have retained an attorney and will be filing suit if the charges aren't dropped.

These companies, if they are going to service people with fees like this, need to disclaim very clearly that people need to routinely check their usage or they may wind up with an out of control bill. One good lawsuit would probably burn that one into common law.

Meh, no regulations please. I'd say that perhaps people should read what they sign first. If it's too complex, then the market will demand less complex terms and services..and that has already happened. There are many alternative plans for people who don't want to sign a contract. Yay free market capitalism! I myself spend 25$ a month for 750 minutes of text/talk from Net10.

Can you tether the phone to a computer with unlimited data?

How is it more private? When I got one to save few bucks they wanted my license and credit card.

Switch to Sprint, i put up with these two draconian companies for years and i paid AT&T $60 to end my contract with them after nickel and dimming me for so long, when they ended the unlimited data i left them in the dust and never looked back.. Sprint paid me $100 for the switch to port the number to them gave me a Droid phone for free and now im happy with unlimited everything and $25 less per month on my bill. :D

They still give you unlimited data if you are grandfathered in (I am). But watch out if you go to Canada or Europe!
