The leadership in both parties is listening. In the hopes of stopping the madness of ever-earlier presidential primaries, Democrats and Republicans have tried to set forth a primary that doesn't get under way until February 2012, remains competitive through March and finishes cleanly.

But while they are optimistic, it remains to be seen whether they've truly succeeded in preventing rogue states from pushing the primary calendar into January or even earlier.

For the next cycle, only the Republicans are likely to be affected. As president, Obama is expected to be handily re-nominated, so the Democratic primaries should amount to a series of pep rallies for the party’s incumbent.

Ideally I think we'd want to see the former happen, with the early states going in Feb instead of Jan, and super tuesday in march.

Florida has decided to do an early non-binding statewide "straw poll" that is then followed months later by the actual vote.

That way they can have some influence early on, but don't lose their delegates.

As long as other states don't try to step on NH. The people of NH greatly overpay the Feds for the services they get from the Feds. NH being the first primary in the nation is one of the ways NH helps make up for the massive welfare it gives the rest of the nation (especially the states in the South and West that get massive Fed welfare).

Why not have every contest before May be proportional? I love proportional. More delegates for Ron Paul AND when candidates drop out, those delegates theoretically can change to Dr. Paul.

BUT REMEMBER what happened at the LAST convention??? Ron Paul's delegates weren't allowed to be "heard".

Feb primaries are proportional. That's simple. Easy. It's a lot better than having half your delegates stripped, then having them seated at the primary anyways!! Unless you win 60% of the states primary voters, all delegate allocation should be proportional. That way the election will at least be more entertaining for Diabold software programmers.

it also allows candidates like McCain to get nominated..

I believe all states will be proportional this time instead of winner takes all. if will be an interesting primary season. gives more people more incentive to vote and rp a better chance.

Well yeah, that's the type of person that Americans want to get nominated.
