Very interesting! It makes me wonder how we ended up relying on multiplication tables in schools. I like this way better.

i don't think it's that practical for humans. if you disagree, please show the step by step process to multiply 113 * 17 in a way that's faster than the usual algorithm.

I tried it, and couldn't make it work. :(

I tried it, and couldn't make it work. :(

I tried LPG's problem of 113*17 and it did work, and in fact, I found it significantly easier than the 'traditional' method of multiplying. Different strokes for different folks I guess. maybe I'm just a binary thinker.

I tried it again, and made it work! yayy!! :)

I'm not seeing the link either (on my iPhone). This is the second time since the forum upgrade. Something is buggered.

Cool, but let me introduce you to a new device that will totally make this process even faster!

What is 14.4 * 39.3?

What is 14.4 * 39.3?

Decimals/fractions are taught in part 2. I haven't watched that video yet. :D

ETA -- he only does division that results in fractions/decimals, not multiplying decimals.

I would assume you just move both decimals in your multiplication problem one place right, and then take your answer and move the decimal place 2 places to the left.

ETAA -

14.4 * 39.3

144 * 393

56,592

565.92

14.4 * 39.3 = 565.92

This is cool. I never learned "standard" multiplication. I always did lattice tables.

Sounds like Mathemagic (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M4vqr3_ROIk) to me.

Of course, its just easy to recognize patterns.

For example 1,111,111 times 1,111,111 (or 1111111 squared) is 1,234,567,654,321 which is really hard to do.

Count the number of digits in your number. 1,111,111 has 7 characters in it. Count to 7. 1234567. Then count back down to 1. 6543421. You end up with 1234567654321. The number seems huge if you are trying to think of it as a quantity, but think of it as a pattern, not a quantity. Count from 1 up to 7 (or what ever the total number of digits is in your all 1 number) then count back down to 1.
