Congratulations! It's coming up soon.

Thanks!

yeah, it's an early swearing in, and it took longer than expected to set up as Governor Perdue kept hinting at convening an emergency session starting January 3rd. I've has January 10th on my calendar got a month now, but it just confirmed about 30 minutes ago.

Almost makes you want to move to NC, a 'free state project' is starting there in about 3 weeks.

LOL in all reality I will just be the RP of the NC House -- able to win a few allies on certain issues, but mostly alone. The difference being I intend to work very hard to fill the NCGA with likeminded people so the place isn't empty of principle when it comes time to move on.

ETA - that does mean, of course, using the positin as a platform for voter education, so 6 years from now we may in fact be well on our way to a decent liberty state.

I had imagined all the new Reps just get sworn in at the Statehouse. Is this your own choice or is it tradition to be sworn in within your district?

We do get sworn in at the State House, on opening day, all 120 of us at the same time in a big ceremony. That's January 26th. About half of freshmen usually swear in early, and that is usually done closer to home. That's what I am doing.

Side Note - I recently learned that districts with elected State House members get an extra convention delegate...

You're also an Ex-Officio member of the NC State GOP Executive Committee:

C. STATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
1. Membership
The State Executive Committee shall be composed of the following:

...blah blah blah...

f. All current Republican Members for the North Carolina General Assembly, as ex-officio members, and shall not effect quorum.

I was already a member by virtue of being my county 1st Vice Chair ;)

Does that mean we get one more for the Jan 15 meeting because you are being sworn in early?

Bring someone to the meeting that wants to be nominated, and get it on the agenda before the vote for the interim State Chair.

From the Plan of Org:

C. STATE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE

5. Vacancies and Removals
a. Vacancies due to death, resignation, discontinuance of residency within the State, removal of any Officer of the State Executive Committee, or for any other reason, shall be filled by the State Executive Committee.

I would assume the other freshmen Legislators would do the same thing, so the committee may elect a bloc of people as new members.

Thanks man! All 60-some press releases went out today, including copying the campaign mailing list. I didn't want to send the press releases TOO early so that they wouldn't get lost come time for the event. I dunno how much press will actually BE there, but I am sure that at lease some will be. I am betting on the Franklin Times at a minimum -- their HQ is like 1.2 miles from the event lol.

HUZZAH!

It's a little bit nervous-making. Once I'm sworn in, I'm no longer a Representative-elect, but a Representative, full stop. It's a pretty big distinction, and pretty much everything changes in the moment of swearing in. I will no longer be my own, really, but the people's representative. It'll all be good, but it's still just a little nervous making. Less so than the actual election of course lol

Hmmmm. I would think that in my particular position the vacancy will be filled by replacing me as 1st Vice Chair at the County level. The passage you cite will be the one used to replace Chairman Tom Fetzer...as to other vacancies on the ExComm, I'm thinking that should be done at the county level rather than at the State level.

Honestly I don't think so, because this is about delegates, not ExComm members. So we get an extra delegate in the conventions, but not an extra seat on the ExComm -- except inasmuch as I, myself, will be seated on the ExComm even after a new 1st Vice Chair is elected at the County level.

It's a surreal experience to say the least. I know that everything changes in 8 days. For some people, being sworn in might just be an event along the way, but for me it marks the transition from private person to public person. Thanks so much, and here's hoping we can have a profound impact nationwide from our little ol' State House. ;)
