White House: Holbrooke's 'Last Words' Made in Jest

He was joshing with the medical staff, says State Department

http://www.newser.com/story/107579/white-house-holbrookes-last-words-made-in-jest.html

(Newser) – The White House is taking issue with today's heavy coverage of the last words attributed to Richard Holbrooke: "Stop this war in Afghanistan." Far from being a melodramatic plea, it was actually part of a lighthearted back-and-forth with the medical staff, says the State Department's PJ Crowley. It began when a doctor told him to relax, and Holbrooke responded something along the lines of, "I can't relax, I'm worrying about Afghanistan and Pakistan," reports the Huffington Post.

Crowley's account: "After some additional exchanges ... (Holbrooke's doctor) said, 'Tell you what, we'll try to fix this challenge while you're in surgery.' And (Holbrooke) said, 'Yeah, see if you can take care of that,' including ending the war." The Washington Post has more details, but the gist remains that the comment was made in jest and not as a serious policy matter. Meanwhile, the administration's official review of the war comes out Thursday.

Crowley is a known and proven liar

Q: Is the US involved in any military operations in Yemen?
Crowley: No.

Q: No?
Crowley: But we – those kinds of reports keep cropping up. We do not have a military role in this conflict.

I happen to believe them. War was good business for Richard Holbrooke. All that prestige, meeting with world leaders, cajoling and cavorting with them, staying at the finest hotels and eating the best food, always flying with security and all sorts of staff.

Perhaps he had a guilty conscious and at his death bed he realized it?

In the Washington Post article I read earlier, they kept mentioning that his doctors were Middle Eastern as well, I think to imply that she/hr was lying about what he said WHILE the author essentially stated that he was joking.

Those two things don't quite work together, in my mind. Of course, the article is rather clunky too.

El-Bayoumi, an Egyptian American internist who is Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton's physician, replied that she would worry for him. Holbrooke responded by telling her to end the war, the aide said.

The aide said he could not be sure of Holbrooke's exact words. He emphasized Tuesday that the comment was made in painful banter, rather than as a serious exhortation about policy.

Holbrooke also spoke extensively about his family and friends as he awaited surgery by Farzad Najam, a thoracic surgeon of Pakistani descent.

Wouldn't change my mind if he was joking or not. The war itself is certainly no joke.
