Can someone explain to me what is he trying to achieve and by what means?

I mean I don't understand what "to filibuster" means.

It's a mock filibuster, because he's not actually blocking a measure scheduled for a vote on the floor.

In the Senate there are ways for a Senator to take the floor indefinitely as long as he can continue talking, thereby blocking all progress. This has made for some dramatic movies and interesting political maneuvers, but my understanding it can by broken now if 60 other senators vote to overrule it...

This is how filibusters should have to be done...

Too bad he can't hold out until January when the Republicans take over the House and don't need to comprimise.

Sanders by nature would oppose you getting some of your money . He wants it and will decide what wasteful ways to spend it for you .

He has just been BSing for who knows how long. Seems pretty pointless. I guess he is enjoying his attention on the floor. He kept going on and on about breaking up "too big to fail" banks. I turned it off after a while.

It's not a traditional filibuster where he's blocking something, because there are no votes scheduled for today. He's just giving a day-long speech to make a point.

The longest one lasted over 24 hrs. If you could get a string of those going, then they'd leave for Christmas by the time it was over.

i don't know why people are calling this lame - he's out there speaking for all of us who want reform - at least he IS trying to do something.

I will give Sanders credit for having the balls to actually Filibuster. I wish there were more Senators willing to hold a filibuster.

He will never do this for expensive social spending or tax increasing crap.

I give him mad props and mad respect for doing this, though I don't agree with his philosophy.

The guy is a coward. Why doesn't he veto the bill and demand what he really wants: a cap on income. He's just a flop-flopping moron when he calls for anything less than 100% taxes on high incomes.

lester1/2jr
12-10-2010, 05:07 PM
This is stupid. why is he filibustering raising rich peoples taxes from 35 to 39.5 percent?

this is what moves him to filbuster something? not the iraq war? not the fed?

How is raising this rate a minute amount going to create jobs?

this is foolish. I totally condemn bernie sanders and this long winded attack on liberty.

wtf are you doing to fix the economy and this country? this shit is going to get real very fast - and you, i and everyone here is going to have to pay up to cover the costs for those who can't afford food, medicine or shelter. sitting typing comments on a message board doesn't accomplish one damn thing. he's speaking up on this. i totally disagree on his spending views and we need serious cuts, but at least he's trying to save you, i and others billions.

we need to stop playing into their hands.

this has nothing to do with a tax cut. no tax will be cut when this bill is passed. The current tax rates will be maintained. That is not a tax cut. It simply isn't a tax hike.

that's incorrect. you have been living so long with a tax cut that you don't know what living in a real-world taxing situation is. free ride is over folks.

And here I thought that paying 40-50%+ of my income was a 'free-ride'. It is impossible to tax enough to cover the budget. Period. Even if taxes were 100% and everything was maintained, it still would not cover the budget. I am sure there will be Nixon-styled price and wage controls coming down the pike (Yay...not).

I also take umbrage at the fact that you act like getting half your property stolen is a free-ride. Yay, Federated systems are so great -- you get taxed on 18 different Governmental layers!

Yes, he's trying to transform America into a Communist country. That's certainly something that all liberty lovers should support.

I wonder how well Sanders would have done in a debate with Ben Franklin?...

Sanders actually laid out a pretty solid understanding of the many symptoms of our economic woes.

Of course, he never touched on any of the sources, only wailing about needing to fix the symptoms with the equivalent of bloodletting.

AT least Bernie agrees with us in that he thinks the big banks should not exist. He wants to break them up, but we understand that they would have broken up naturally if we had allowed them to fail. Community banks would have bought the assets that were worth anything.

Sanders is a shill like the rest... he's the first to shoot off his mouth about everything, but when you ask why H.R.1207/S.604 on Auditing the Fed, why after his legislation was out for a year and passed the House by super majority, why why why did he change the Audit in S.604 for a one time look?

He's another bought and paid for hack by the Money Masters...

+fakerep. This just became lame.

I believe those on Huff po think it is real, from the early comments. I haven't looked lately, though.

That is about what I've come to think of Sanders -- grandstander. As when he sold out S604 for watered down nothing language when the votes were already there, swapping the text of the bill number senators had pledged to with text Obama approved.
