Police with riot shields clashed with angry student protesters near London's Parliament Square on Thursday as lawmakers approved a controversial plan to triple university tuition fees in England.

The plan to raise the cap on tuition fees to 9,000 pounds ($14,000) was approved, 323-302, a small margin given the government's 80-set majority.

Many in the crowd booed when they heard the result of the vote.

Britons pay very high taxes, and one of the things they have received in return is a free - or almost free - college education, CBS News Correspondent Elizabeth Palmer reports.

Not any more. The students protesting Thursday will graduate with very large debts, Palmer reports.

By nightfall, police corralled the students in the center of London, in Parliament Square, where some of the more violent ones started to attack government buildings, Palmer reports.

Earlier, small groups of protesters threw flares, billiard balls and paint bombs, and officers, some on horses, rushed to reinforce the security cordon. Police said 13 protesters and four officers were injured in the fracas, while seven people were arrested.

Thousands of other students held demonstrations and sit-ins throughout the country, heaping pressure on the government to reverse course. Students marching through central London banged drums, waved placards and chanted "education is not for sale," as weeks of nationwide protests reached a crescendo.

The vote put Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg and other Liberal Democrat leaders in an awkward spot. Liberal Democrats signed a pre-election pledge to oppose any such tuition hike.

Why don't they let the free market run the education system and get government regulation out of it? Prices would lower.

I moved to London a few months ago. In the wake of these events, I've decided it would be prudent to keep my political opinions to myself... :D

These people really need to understand that nothing is free. Everything has a cost and affects someone else.

So much hassle would be solved if this simple truth was widely understood.

Sometimes I wish the non-socialists in this country were as passionate about things as the socialists in other countries.

Start dismantling all government handouts in this country and you'll see a lot of people who consider themselves "non-socialists" in this country act just like the "socialists" in other countries. It's like drugs. Some drugs cause their users to go ape if they're forced off them cold turkey. That's why the first order of business is to hold the line on Obamacare so we don't create more addicts.

Yes, but I agree with the students.

They were defrauded by their government.
Their government committed fraud.
They were sold a fraudulent bill of goods.

The high taxes were instituted with the understanding that they would receive low-cost university experiences. (I won't use the word "education", though.)
Now their government is backing down on the deal.
The students have no legal recourse.

I'm not saying it's right to get their money's worth in burned government property.
I'm just saying, I understand.

I was driving back home from work today and listening to (I think BBC) "The World" and they had such an awesome report - England's babyboomers have eaten up all the money by devouring socialist services left and right and nothing is left for the youngsters, and now they're pissed. They basically said socialism has failed without being so point blank about it. I'll see if I can dig up a recording and post to youtube

I wasn't really trying to funny but come to think of it, Apeshit & Riot might make for a good bandname or album title.

Word. It's sort of like fascism. "You have two cows. The government makes you milk the cow, then they take it at gunpoint and sell you the milk for an inflated price."
