Hi,
I was in a discussion with a friend who told me that foreign countries are buying rights to our Aquifer, and that they're draining it. My first response was, "It's a free market. Someone will come along and sell water cheaper if they raise the prices too high." However he pointed out that if all the water was drained, we wouldn't have tap water, or even bath water.

Assuming this is true, I'm all out of thoughts on this situation. Should we let the government step in and secure some reserves? Kind of fighting my inner self with this issue.

Thanks

I think we need a link. One question is how does the govt own aquifer rights under private land in fee simple?

And the SW is short water already, if true this would be politically explosive.

But I need to see a link or some authority that this is actually happening. I know that one huge reason for NAFTA was to give us rights on Canada's water/energy resources, so this is a bit counter intuitive.

I'm having trouble finding a link as-well. I probably should have mentioned before he's one of those Alex Jones conspiracy people. I wasn't writing this as if it were true, but what would be ideal if this situation was hypathetically true. My personal beleif is that the government has no right to regulate the water supply, but what if there was a chance we could have no water, and wouldn't be able to perform the daily essentials. How would we prevent that without government involvment?

I know not what you are talking about here in the states.

But I do know that the Bush family bought over 100,000 acres of land in Paraguay that sits on or very close to Latin America's largest water aquifer the Guarani aquifer

The problem and solution are the same concept as any shared public space:

... our Aquifer ...

Which aquifer? There are many aquifers around the country. Here in Texas, the Edwards Aquifer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edwards_Aquifer) supplies water to San Antonio and other cities. It's use is regulated by the Edwards Aquifer Authority (http://www.edwardsaquifer.org/index.php) established by the State of Texas.

When they drain all our water, no problem we can use recycled sewer water, problem solved

I would imagine he was talking about all of them. Maybe it's just one of his conspiracies.

However, I'm glad to hear that the state of Texas is in owner ship of one. I guess that's where my faith would fall to, state regulation.

He probably saw Ventura's show two days ago. As usual, I'm sure that the free market is not dictating our water being sold. As usual, big corporations are probably getting in bed with government and doing things that you and I can't. Watch this show, then ask yourself the following questions: can I pay $100 a year to suck as much water out of the Great Lakes as I can? Why am I told I can't have a well in many areas, but this dude in Texas is able to suck out and sell as much as he wants?

It's not the free market. Its typical corporatism and fascism. So you are half right and your friend is half right. The answer is not government control. The answer is not the current fascism we have. The answer is 100% free market. We have to be more careful to point out that most of what goes on in our country is not "free market." It's fascism.

Perfect, I see what you're saying, and I do agree we don't necessarily have a free-market in this country anymore. I guess if anyone were capable of purchasing water rights, we'd be capable of not letting it fall into the wrong hands.
