He probably has a better chance of being speaker than winning the Presidential election. The party sees him as a threat that could send the primaries into chaos. Better off giving him a speaker position now rather than having to deal with that threat later.

Wouldn't giving Ron more power and credibility in the GOP make him an even more dangerous candidate in the primary?

GOP already had the election. Pretty Boy McTanny is the new speaker.

The deal would be to give him the speaker position to keep him out of the Presidential race. I bet Ron would keep that committment.
