Just seen Ms. Bachmann on freedom watch (12/4/2010 episode). I'm so done with her. She has shown her true colors as a protector of big government secrets and anti free speech for coming out against WikiLeaks. She reminds me of Glenn Beck, co-opting and taking advantage of the Liberty movement. Now she's calling herself the "leader" of the tea party caucus?? Ron Paul was absolutely right not to join that caucus. As far as I'm concerned, that caucus is hopelessly comprimised. She is no constitutionalist, she is a complete PHONY!!

So you just have to determine where those limits should be placed. I generally have a fairly libertarian view of the 1st amendment, and I don't agree with Bachmann that Assange should be prosecuted. However, I'm not going to say that she doesn't believe in the Constitution because she has a more narrow interpretation of the 1st amendment than I do.

Speaking at the National Press Club this morning, Congresswoman Michele Bachmann (R-MN) called Iran “a danger to every nation in the world,” and claimed that, according to “intelligence,” “we know that they [Iran] already have a nuclear capability.”

This is at odds with the CIA’s March 2010 report (pdf) to Congress, which did not state that Iran had already achieved a weapons capability, but that:

We continue to assess Iran is keeping open the option to develop nuclear weapons in part by developing various nuclear capabilities that bring it closer to being able to produce such weapons, should it choose to do so. We do not know, however, if Iran will eventually decide to build nuclear weapons.

Bachmann may have been misled by a sensational(ly dishonest) Washington Times headline that screamed “CIA: Iran capable of producing nukes.” In the body of that story, however, reporter Bill Gertz acknowledges the CIA report actually states nothing of the kind, but rather “reflects the published conclusion of a controversial 2007 National Intelligence Estimate that stated Iran had halted work on nuclear weapons in 2003.”

The promotional materials for this morning’s event, hosted by the right-wing organization Freedom Watch, condemned the Obama administration’s policy of “appeasement” and stated that, as Iran “introduces nuclear weapons into the Middle East… the Islamic regime of fraudulently-elected President Ahmadinejad must be removed now, before it is too late.”

Bachmann also called for the U.S. to support the People’s Mujahideen of Iran, also known as the Mujahideen Khalq Organization (MKO), an organization previously supported by Saddam Hussein and listed by the State Department as a terrorist organization since 1997 for alleged attacks on Americans.

Referring to the People’s Mujahideen Bachmann said, “We have shackled this freedom-seeking group which has the ability to help Iranians rise up against that tyrannical regime.”

I predicted last week that we should expect to see conservative calls for the U.S. to support the People’s Mujahideen — which, like the Iraqi National Congress, enjoys little actual support among the people they propose to lead in revolution — though I’m actually a bit surprised to see it come so soon.

No way in hell is Nazi Germany any worse than Soviet Union, if anything it was better. The Nazis didn't even start killing Jews & Gypsies until the British & Americans started attacking. All the Soviets wanted was control of Europe, and they got a large portion of it which allowed them to spread their terror throughout the world. At least Nazi Germany would have balanced them out.

That was almost two years ago, and now she's trying to start her own group, teaching the Constitution while still pissing on the 1st Amendment, being on the wrong side of the Wikileaks issue, not speaking out against our foreign policy at all...

People have different interpretations of the Constitution. Even Ron and Rand don't interpret it the same when it comes to things like military tribunals for terrorists.

Don't be so sure about that. Rand had to say certain things to get past the KY primary. (At least that's the conventional wisdom. I'm not sure KY voters are as unsophisticated as people think.) Besides, the real issue with regards to tribunals isn't the venue where people are tried, but the process that's afforded them. Unfortunately a lot of people are ignorant of the protections tribunals afford defendants. (For example, if you plead guilty to a capital offense in a military tribunal, you still get a trial with the presumption of innocence). Military tribunals don't have the same hearsay rules as article 3 courts, but hearsay rules are statutory and not constitutional. By the way, this is one place where Bachmann did a better job of spelling out her position than Rand, by pointing out that the real problem with article 3 courts is that defendants get their own choice of lawyer. That's a potential problem if some of the evidence is classified. But in general, I'm not a big Bachmann fan.

Keep on 'allying' yourself with authoritarians who guise themselves as limited-Government proponents, but who are nothing of the sort, and who the general population believes are the carriers of that banner. If that is your strategy I doubt you will ever see anything remotely called liberty in anyones lifetime. Carry on though. (Besides, I am a purist in philosophy, not in alliances.
