Just what anyone in power would want: A list of people who don't want to be spied on. You think they're not going to spy on them just because they tell the government they don't want to be, and give them identifying information?

Why not just have the browser default to "Do not track" and let people who don't mind turn it off?

Why not just have the browser default to "Do not track" and let people who don't mind turn it off?

Because you have to monitor and track people in order to not monitor and track them.

Google can already track most people anyway. Between the analytics and adsense that are ubiquitous and gmail and other services people use tying their IP address(es) to their email accounts, Google databases have a surprising amount of information on your online activities.

What I mean is this....

FTC chairman Jon Leibowitz said he would prefer for the makers of popular web browsers to come up with an setting on their own that would allow consumers to opt out of having their browsing and search habits tracked."

Have the browser preset to "opt out" and let the consumers turn it off should they desire to be tracked.
