It sounds like its a stretch to say they were "forced" to mate with females. They are just bi-sexual buzzards.

When are the fricking wackos going to understand that animals act differently that humans and to place the same expectations on them is insane.
stupid stupid people.....
They should have dog prisons for dogs that sniff under age dogs butts.

Well, the zoo wants reproducers. If they are not going to do the job the zoo is keeping them around to do, then they are going to get fired and have to find another job. Seems the zoo is doing it's best to find appropriate conditions where those non-reproducers will be able to do the job they are there to do.

What would you have the zoo do? Provide the birds with rainbow colored collars and start a LGBT support group for them? Take a gay male vulture and a straight female vulture and make a TV sitcom?

The fact that people can get outraged about THIS and not violations of human liberty is fairly odd.

"They always sat so closely together. They defended their nest from the other vultures," the zoo's curator, Dirk Wewers, told The Daily Telegraph of Australia.

But Wewers explains their preference for one another as second-best. "A suitable female was missing and in such a case vultures look for companionship from the next best thing, even if it is a male," the zookeeper said. "Detlef looked for a bird of the opposite sex but settled with Guido."

Lol, it all makes sense now. Imagine two guys getting locked in a room with a bunch of unattractive, squawking women. "Yo bro, you got my back? If we stick together, maybe we can hold them off!". :p

That's exactly what I was going to say. Look at how twisted and utterly stupid this is:

sparking outrage from gay rights activists who accuse the zoo of discriminating against birds of a different feather.

Oh yea... let's get outraged over some meaningless bullshit involving vultures

No wonder this country, along with many others, are on a downward spiral. Outrage over vultures, silence over big brother, central banks and fiat currency.

Let's see. Many a straight man has become gay in prison. So animals aren't that different. Big whoop.
