Anyone fly with a gun?

What was the old way to fly with a gun in your bag? Sure you reported it and it was handled very carefully. What WAS that procedure? What is the procedure now?

I was under the false impression checking a gun into luggage gave some sort of VIP treatment to the customer. Ensure the gun gets back to the person accurately and such. I guess these days checking a gun into luggage doesn't help get you through the groping.
