View Full Version : California is Winner Take All by District

The rules for the Republican primary in California, as I understand them:

The winner in each Congressional district gets 3 delegates to the national convention. Second place gets you a pat on the back, and 0 delegates. There are 53 Congressional districts, so this is 159 delegates total.

The winner of the state gets 11 at large delegates. The runner-up gets zilch, again.

3 state party leaders go as unpledged delegates, bringing the total up to a whopping 173. California is huge.

The above raises a few interesting questions:

In which districts does Ron Paul have the best shot at a first place finish?

How can we maximize Ron Paul's showing?

From what I've seen, Romney and Giuliani are more popular here than Thompson or McCain or Huckabee, by a long shot. Tancredo and Hunter also might do better here than they do nationally, but hopefully they will drop out by February 5th, and their supporters will come to Ron Paul. How do we help make that happen?

With Romney and Giuliani splitting the vote with the other pro-war candidates, 30% might be enough to win in many districts, I think. With low turnout (for the other candidates), Ron Paul has a definite chance.

For perspective, the Republican nomination can be won with 1259 delegates.

California alone (173 delegates) is almost 14% of the total needed to win the nomination.

Here are some excellent districts in which to promote Ron Paul. These are the gerrymandered districts that have under 60,000 registered Republicans each -- many are districts in which the Republicans didn't even bother to run anyone against the incumbent Democrats.

Keep in mind that each Congressional district in California is worth 3 delegates to the highest vote-getter.

Does anyone here live in any of these districts?

Ron Paul is doing well in certain black neighborhoods. These could be great targets. There are many on the ground democrats who are pro business, small government that will go Republican if given a good candidate.

There are some black republicans who work with democrats in these districts.

In the hispanic districts there are many entrepreneurs who want smaller government. Republicans work well with the democrats in these neighborhoods.

There tend to be less elite hard core leftists in these neighborhoods.

The republicans really ignore many of these districts. Many congressional districts are lucky to have ten or twenty active republican activists.

Look at the districts around Occidental college and USC where Ron had his huge rally.

USC is close to five or six of the districts.

So what kind of tactics and strategy should we be focusing on? I'm in the 20th district I think which is North County of San Diego. At least that's where I'm registered for. I spend my time at USC where we are trying to get a lot of the student vote.

The USC campus would be my target if I was you, If you are not already join your students for ron paul group for USC as well as the local meetup group.

Concentrate on the Political Science buildings with flyers etc.

Go to fraternity row at USC. You can get to alot of voters quickly.

In these areas ten to twenty people can make a huge impact.

Is Cal a closed primary??

Hopefully a low voter turnout will be enough to let Ron win.

I wouldn't assume a high turnout will hurt Ron Paul although that's what the pundits want you to think.
