As a country, Russia is pretty active with their gold reserves- periodically buying or selling them. It was just a few years ago I believe it was they sold a big chunk to raise money for their struggling government finances. This month they are reporting a decline in reserves of $3.5 billion dollars. http://www.fxnonstop.com/index.php/component/content/article/66676-russian_market_10671

Russian gold reserves from 5 to 12 November 2010. decreased by 3.5 billion dollars

The volume of international reserves of the Russian Federation on 12 November 2010. amounted to 495.7 billion U.S. dollars against 499.2 billion dollars on November 5 this year, said Thursday, Nov. 18, the department external and public relations of Bank of Russia.

Thus, the reserves of the Bank of Russia in their weekly terms at a fixed date decreased by 3.5 billion dollars, or 0.7%.

Russia's international reserves are highly liquid financial assets held by the Bank of Russia and the Russian government at the balance sheet date. International reserves consist of assets in foreign currency, monetary gold, special drawing rights (SDR), reserve position in IMF and other reserve assets.
