Suspected bomb meant for Munich-bound flight

http://www.thelocal.de/national/20101118-31257.html

Namibian police have hindered a possible terrorist attack on a flight from Windhoek to Munich, Federal Criminal Police (BKA) said Thursday. A suspected explosive device was found in a piece of luggage discovered as the LTU/Air Berlin flight was being loaded.

•Terror warning sparks surveillance debate - Society (18 Nov 10)
•De Maizière warns of imminent terror attacks - National (17 Nov 10)
X-rays of the suitcase showed batteries connected to a detonator and a ticking timer. Authorities are examining whether the device could have exploded.

The BKA sent officers based in neighbouring South Africa to the Namibian capital to aid local authorities in the investigation, and plans on sending more help from Germany soon.

Every passenger and piece of luggage on the flight by the charter airline underwent an additional security check before the plane was allowed to take off. It arrived safely in Munich early on Thursday morning with 296 passengers on board.

"Only after the conclusion of an investigation and visual inspection by the BKA will there be information as to whether these were explosives,” the police statement said.

Namibian police later on Thursday only confirmed the luggage contained wires and a timer.

"Air Berlin has confirmed that there was no explosive material in the laptop bag found in Namibia," Sabina Teller, spokeswoman for Air Berlin, told CNN. "The luggage was found in the airport, at no point was on the plane. It had no luggage label so it was impossible to know where it was going, which company it was supposed to fly with or who it belonged to."

My dad was going through the airport not that long ago and took of his watch before going through the metal detectors and put it in one of his shoes to put that though the x-ray machine. They got all excited and even called over a supervisor before they realized what it really was.

Implies the presence of a primary explosive, but not of a main charge.

Yah... Considered that... For sure a real possibility, I just think it'd be a weak attempt seeing the issue has reached the floor...

Another thing I've considered is that something like that here would maybe a.) Be too fuckin obvious or b.) be used against them to say "it doesn't work anyway"... So maybe keeping it in our heads for a few weeks and then having it happen here would present a "breaking-point"...

BUT, I think they know they'd have to do bigger than that... which is why I lean toward "this is not the flag"...

The important thing is that as many of us are on our toes watching this and ready to cry foul when it, whatever it may be, goes down.

Whatever it is, all of the classic calling cards will be left behind. Unusual numerological significance. Some video of FallGuy001 refusing a pornoscanner, getting a 'less invasive' pat-down, etc. Perhaps they will throw in some magic passports that don't behave like normal paper too.

I've said it before. Whenever it occurs, it will be used to:

1) justify making refusal of scanners & pat downs illegal

2) expand the screening to include iris scanning/thumb printing & other biometrics (this is already in place in all international airports and anyone coming into the US with a foreign passport has to ante up).

3) Perhaps start another war

U.S. dummy bomb sparked airport terror scare

BERLIN — A suspicious suitcase found at Windhoek airport that triggered an international alarm was only a test of local security and did not contain any explosives, German Interior Minister Thomas de Maiziere said on Friday.

Story: Suspicious bag delays Germany-bound flight
Namibian police found the suitcase in routine security checks during loading ahead of a German tourist flight to Munich, Namibian and German authorities said Thursday.

De Maiziere told a news conference in Germany Friday that Federal Crime Office (BKA) experts examined the suitcase and found it was a test suitcase designed to check security.

"BKA officials have examined it and the result is that it is a so-called 'real test suitcase' from a U.S. company," he said.

"This company produces alarm and detection systems and these test suitcases are made to test security measures," De Maiziere added. "No explosives were found in the suitcase and at no time was there any danger to passengers."

California grandmother made dummy bomb that led to international terror alert

Device found at Namibia airport was made to help train airport staff

NBC News and news services
updated 7 minutes ago

A dummy bomb that sparked an international terror alert was made by an 80-year-old grandmother in California and ended up discarded in an Namibia airport because of "a boo boo," NBC News reported Friday.

The device — part of a "modular bomb set" or MBS, which is used for x-ray and physical/bag search training — was manufactured by a "mom and pop" machine shop in Sonora called Larry Copello Inc. four to five years ago.

The owner, Larry Copello, told NBC News that his then-80-year-old grandmother had completed it, doing the wiring and fitting Velcro attachments.

The device was found at Windhoek airport by Namibian police in routine security checks during loading ahead of an Air Berlin tourist flight to Munich, Namibian and German authorities said Thursday.

Germany has been in a heightened state of alert this week with warning of a possible terrorist attack.

Coppello told NBC News that he had no doubt that "someone made a boo boo."

The device was not functional, completely inert and unable even make a spark, he added.

And it wasn't a "boo boo", it was done on purpose, because, going back to original story, they took everybody off the plane and tried to get somebody to claim ownership and nobody would.

Either the terrorist (US Operative) that planted it was lying and one of the passengers or, more likely, had long since hauled ass.

Dummy Bomb Maker gets visit from FBI

He said the device, which is about a foot long, was discovered in the bag during the last screening before it was to be loaded onto the airplane bound for Munich. He added that, while intended for training purposes, it could easily have been converted into a bomb with the addition of 500 grams of explosives.

Mr. Copello confirmed that his company, Larry Copello Inc., a maker of security testing products, had made and sold the device found in Namibia.

“Somebody had purchased it from me a few years ago,” he said, and then in a later interview clarified it might have been as long as four or five years ago. His grandmother, he said, assembled the simulated bomb.

Mr. Copello, 64, said he had been interviewed by the F.B.I. on Thursday and was not at liberty to disclose some of the details.
