Granted it will be incredibly tough politically, but actually balancing the budget with some perfectly reasonable spending cuts (and no new taxes) seems fairly easy according to this interactive projections. And these projections only allow for you to make some minor tweaks in military policy, like slight troop reduction...
what would you cut out of these and what wouldn't you cut?
