OH MAN - I'm all for mandating obese pics on MickyD's FF's.... cept isn't it spelled "Neekid"???

now about pics of corpses on cig packs - only if they are well toasted - like guests at a napalm run. Bet the DoD has plenty of recent photo's to use as source material...

That is of course, only if they give me the franchise on mandated really hot neekid chicks on bubble gum cards... U know that is going to be a really hot seller! :D

I don't smoke either, but I'm offended by the idea they think they can impose their death porn on other people.

Let's put drunk driving victims on all alcoholic beverage containers.

Someone else already suggested that we put shot up, burned corpses on military recruitment centers. I like that idea.

I voted no. Take away my "libertarian card" if you will. (I don't consider myself libertarian anyway). But this in no way infringes on the rights of people to kill themselves with cigarettes. Contrast that with the second hand smoking laws which, while libertarian in principle (NAP), are getting out of hand when they start going after people's dwellings. (Also the government is ignoring less restrictive alternatives like smokeless ashtrays and the FDA is even being hostile to electronic cigarettes which would get rid of secondhand smoke altogether). Lastly I think what's happened with cigarettes in the country is the best possible argument for decriminalizing other drugs. Arguing that illicit drugs aren't dangerous is simply unpersuasive. (I don't even believe that myself). But if legalization wouldn't necessarily lead to more use then it doesn't matter how dangerous the illegal drugs are. Alcohol consumption has gone through the stratosphere. But cigarette smoking is on a steady decline. Maybe people wouldn't be so scared of pot legalization if they knew the packages could have "death porn" on them.

I have no problem with it as long as they put a skull and crossbones on the American flag. I mean let's be honest with everything, if we are going to do it than let it not be half assed.

I believe I saw a study that concluded putting those labels on cigarette packages actually makes kids more likely to use them.

Either way, let's not forget that big tobacco is in bed with big government. Philip Morris teamed up with Obama to pass the tobacco regulations bill, which actually benefits (http://www.washingtonexaminer.com/politics/How-Philip-Morris-benefits-from-tobacco-regulation-42635857.html) them.

Yep. Especially since they market "more EXXXXTREEEEME" things to kids and they seem to love it...it's probably going to appeal to boys even more.

The more gory, the better the sales may be, I'd say. Tobacco execs probably know this.

I do smoke, and The obama tobacco bill was such B.S. Philip Morris is loving Obama and Bush regulations, especially now since all the good European cigarettes are practicaly impossible to obtain in the U.S.; people like Philip Morris face practically no competition in the U.S.

As far as the pics go I think it goes too far. I roll my own usually so doesn't really effect me, but lets face it anyone who thinks smoking is good for you, or doesn't ave adverse effects is living in lalala land. I also truly believe if people smoked chemical freee tobacco the issue of smoking we not be so bad.

Wait, cigarettes are bad for you? Who knew? These pictures will make everyone understand that cigarettes are dangerous. Once they figure that out they will stop smoking.

I roll my own
I stopped buying "packs" some time ago when the taxes on them raised the price prohibitively.

I haven't even seen the new pics. But then I ignored the warning labels that they had prior.
pretty sure I could ignore the offensive pictures as well. Just can't ignore the tax.

I quit smoking last year, 2 pack a dayer for 15 yrs. One of the best moves of my life.

That said, the Govt can go fuck themselves with their regulations. It's all cool to go after them dirty smokers, but after they're through with them, your 'dirty' habit is next.

This is a giant overstep IMO. Everyone knows the health risks of cigarette smoking. Just like driving without your seat-belt or riding without a helmet.

It would be funny to see the tobacco companies simply switch to a new form of packaging in order to subvert this new regulation...

Can't find the polls - I don't smoke, but I think it is disgusting to have those pictures there. Maybe we should just put pictures of crushed mangled people sitting in their crushed mangled cars right on the steering wheels of every car too. Don't drive, you just might DIE. Bastards

Stupid regulations..

Yeah, I didn't see the poll just now, either, but I wanted to.

Because non-smokers don't die.

I work for a graduation supply company. I wonder how my coworkers might feel if the government decided to force us to print pictures of abortions on all of our diplomas? It makes about as much damn sense.

A little background... Kentucky used to have tobacco as its #1 crop, but it was destroyed by regulations and anti-smoking zealots (marijuana is the #1 crop now according to DEA - a tribute to the effectiveness of the war on drugs.) A grant of over $300,000 went to the University of Kentucky from the stimulus bill, and has funded a lobbying crusade to pass smoking bans, violate property rights and demonize smoking around the state. They are well funded, well organized, and backed up by the Health Dept. and any medical folks who will sell out.

I don't smoke, but still find these busybodies offensive. I'm guessing they stacked the poll to advance their agenda, as they have many other places. The results aren't in line with how normal folk think around here.

Not a smoker ... but the times I've been in Europe ... US cigarettes were a big thing and seemed to be far preferred over European cigarettes.

I disagree. My understanding (someone correct me if I'm wrong here) was that cigarette manufacturers would be required to place these images on their packs of cigarettes. This interference by government into the workplace is inexcusable, no matter their intentions. If I one day wanted to make and sell cigarettes, I would absolutely not if I had to include these types of images. It would already be unjust to make me put the current warning label on my cigarettes.

It is also unjust and tyrannical to mandate to the consumer a limited range of products which are required to contain certain labels, warnings, images, etc. For example, I have been planning to quit smoking for a while, but will almost certainly do so as soon as these images begin to be utilized. I find them abhorrent and insulting. I already know that cigarettes are bad for me. So is the hormone/steroid/preservative injected meat I buy at Harris Teeter. And the Dr. Pepper I'm drinking, and the Wendy's fries and frosty I ate last night, and a whole host of other things we put into our bodies every single day. Until all of these things are also required to bear warning labels and images (God forbid), this is nothing more than one more attack on smokers.

I would offer, as a more just and reasonable alternative, that cigarettes, like food or beverage products, be required to list their contents. This could only be done on a state level, as obviously Congress has no right to be messing around whatever with our personal consumption of anything. But I do believe a state could rightly pass this sort of law, in order to promote a free market (and avoid information failure). The great part of this is that as such information can be found discreetly typed on the side of a package, it becomes entirely the choice of the consumer as to how much they wish to know.
