Steele Coalition In Danger Of Collapse (http://hotlineoncall.nationaljournal.com/archives/2010/11/steele-coalitio.php)

As he contemplates running for a second term, Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele is on the verge of losing his coalition of supporters. Even some of those closest to the controversial chairman have begun urging him to step aside.

Strategists familiar with the RNC who both support and oppose Steele agree there are between 40 and 50 of the 168 voters who will back Steele for a second term. Another 40 to 50 members will definitely vote for someone else. The remaining members, numbering between 88 and 68, are undecided.

Meanwhile, a group of prominent Republicans led by Karl Rove and Ed Gillespie are searching for a consensus candidate capable of defeating Steele. Though they have not settled on a challenger, and in fact are unlikely to find a consensus choice, strategists who both support and oppose Steele say coalitions are forming now to deny Steele a second term.

Underscoring the difficulty Steele will have: Prominent RNC members have approached Wisconsin Republican Party chairman Reince Priebus about the possibility of running for national chairman. Priebus has listened to entreaties from several members, including Mississippi national committeeman Henry Barbour, as first reported by the Washington Post and Wisconsin national committeeman Steve King, as well as from other Steele supporters.

Priebus was Steele's top promoter during the 2009 chairman's race, and Steele named Priebus the RNC's general counsel. He has spent much of the last two years trying to keep RNC members in line, privately assuaging doubts about Steele's chairmanship and serving as a conduit between members and the RNC.

That Priebus would listen to colleagues who urge him to run for national chairman and would not refute those calls in public is a leading indicator that even Steele's most trusted advisors believe it is time for someone new . Priebus refused to comment on the record for this story.

Among those discussing names to replace Steele: Rove, Gillespie, former RNC chairman Mike Duncan, Ohio party chairman Kevin DeWine, Mississippi national committeeman Henry Barbour (nephew of Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour), Massachusetts national committeeman Ron Kaufman and Michigan national committeeman Saul Anuzis. The group had been hesitant to knock Steele in public before the midterms, but they no longer feel bound to keep such criticism inside the family.

Those who want Steele out have been searching for a candidate who could unite two factions -- one that opposes Steele explicitly and one that believes the RNC should take a new direction but harbors little ill will against the incumbent chairman.

But finding a consensus pick has proven difficult. Anuzis, Duncan, Barbour, Priebus, DeWine, Connecticut party chairman Chris Healy and former South Carolina party chairman Katon Dawson are among those who have been discussed. Others said to be considering a bid include Ann Wagner, a former ambassador to Luxembourg who chaired Sen.-elect Roy Blunt's 2010 campaign in Missouri; former Nevada Gov. Bob List is said to be interested as well.

Now, the group of Republican insiders believes there is enough opposition to Steele to allow a number of candidates to fight it out and take their bids to the RNC's winter meeting, when elections will be held on January 14 and 15.

Steele's team has been canvassing voters in hopes of finding support. Observers say Steele must announce his re-election effort alongside public commitments from dozens of members, perhaps as many as 60. If he is unable to win an outright majority on the first ballot, he will likely begin to bleed support; some members who have privately committed to Steele are already telling other potential candidates they will switch their votes on a second ballot.

"It looks to me that he does not have the votes and is waiting to see what develops," RNC treasurer Randy Pullen wrote in an email, obtained by The Hotline, to fellow RNC members on Wednesday. Pullen called for candidate forums in advance of this year's elections, a call likely to be echoed by the most conservative members on the committee.

Steele can count on votes from the outlying territories, which account for nearly 10 percent of the committee's total voters. Delegates representing Guam, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, American Samoa and the Northern Mariana Islands are thrilled with the support Steele has shown them, whether through personal visits or through contributions to local Republican parties. Each island territory gets three votes on the RNC, the same number as any state, and those members have told others seeking votes they will stick with Steele.

But the rest of Steele's support appears to be slipping. Members of Steele's inner circle have directly asked the chairman not to seek another term, as recently as the Sunday following the election.

Several candidates who intend to run for chairman say they are likely to make their campaigns public next week, when the Republican Governors Association meets in San Diego. The post-election RGA meeting has been a traditional campaign kickoff point before; Anuzis declared his candidacy at the gathering just after the 2008 elections.

and Michigan national committeeman Saul Anuzis.

Saul Anuzis tried to ban Ron Paul from participating in debates after he schooled Rudy Giuliani on blowback.

Now he is mentioned as possibly leading the GOP in 2011 and beyond. I don't think that's a good idea.

If Steele is being opposed by Rove then he must not be playing along.

Because I think they are trying to create the rift. Neocons are using their media friends to make up a fake crisis. This way they can brainwash idiots in the committee that Steele has to go. Theyre also trying to divide and destroy the RNC which will help ensure theres a nation-wide rift = Obama has a second term.
Any one other than Steele whether its Duncan, Buck or Anuzis will not be in the favor of the Ron Paul contingent. We will be treated worse than 2008 so can someone from the websmasters start a website to support Steele. This will help us collect petitions supporting Michael Steele at every tea party thereby Steele will owe us one. What say you webmasters?
Im starting a new thread on this. maybe ill inspire someone

The neocons probably didn't like it when Steele did the photo-op with Ron earlier in the year all the while holding up his book. And the allegations of Steele not being a prolific fundraiser are bunk, since much of the party support has been dropped in favor of the tea party, so not exactly Steele's fault.

Reince Priebus is no friend of Liberty. I can vouch for that after seeing his "performance" at the 2008 WI GOP Convention. Arrogant hack are the words that come to mind.

I knew shit storm would come for Steele ever since he expressed his reluctance to obey the will of Military Industrial Complex with 100% obedience.
And that alone, made Steele better than any other RNC chairman of past decades.

Indeed. So who is it best that we contact and say we support steele?

The voting members of the RNC are the people who will actually decide if Steele gets another term. I believe that would be one committeeman and one committeewoman from each state, as well as each state chairman.

NC's state chairman has already asked Steele to step aside. Our committeeman isn't a bad guy overall but he'll follow the state chairman's lead. The committewoman is black and she's probably one of the "Will vote for Steele on the first round" members.

It looks like this is the list of people we need to start digging up contact info for.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republican_National_Committee_members (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Republican_National_Committee_members)

The list is a little out of date, The NC Chair is no longer Linda Daves but Tom Fetzer. Let this also be an indication for us that it is critically important that we are a force to be reckoned with when it comes to voting for our State chairs. If you already have a decent Pauler wing in your State's GOP, we need to focus on getting friendly chairpersons like never before. Rove will be doing everything in his power in 2012 to justify his perverted version of 'conservatism' in the hopes of bringing the GOP back to 2006 and 2008. The best way to guarantee that the GOP lose in 2012 will be to let Rove get his way. he is an evil evil man, and we need to STOP him!

THERE IS STILL TIME to register GOP before December 15th. Please PLEASE register Republican and participate in your 2011 convention cycle. PLEASE do this, and make sure that we get Constitutionalist-friendly and Ron Paul-friendly STATE GOP chairs.

This is more critical than you know! It is literally more important for the liberty movement to get engaged in the GOP convention cycle in 2011 than it was in 2008 by a long way. We can win this battle going away, but we need to get into the 2011 conventions to do it!

I dunno - I bet we can get David Lewis to support Steele instead of just dogging Fetzer's heels. David is also a pretty bright guy, and he is acutely aware that Rovian 'conservatism' is exactly what led to 2008. He doesn't want to see the GOP become extinct any more than most Republicans. The utilitarian argument will almost certainly work on him.

HOWEVER, I am pretty confident that Timothy Johnson will be running for NC GOP Chair in 2011, and I am sure he will support Steele. The RNC Chair vote takes place before or after the State Chair is elected? Not sure, but I do know that we need to hit the streets hard to recruit NC ppl to come to the GOP Convention cycle to support Johnson. Johnson for NC GOP Chair will be a monumental leap forward for the liberty movement in NC, AND he will support Steele's reelection bid. AND he would carry David Lewis's vote with him.
