Republicans also should resist pressure to take all defense spending cuts off the table. Newly elected Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky had the courage to say he'd go after defense waste during his campaign, and I look forward to working with him.

We should start by taking common sense steps like freezing defense spending until the Pentagon can pass an audit and remove all non-defense spending from the Pentagon's budget. Our nation's military leaders understand the need to cut spending.

As Adm. Mike Mullen, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said, "Our national debt is our biggest national security threat." History shows that every nation eventually adopts the foreign policy it can afford. Taking defense spending off the table is indefensible. We need to protect our nation, not the Pentagon's sacred cows.

Lindsey Graham will be tossing and turning in his sleep.

Rand Paul is not going to vote against defense spending. But he might vote against military spending.

Buy a dictionary, Senator.

Sean Hannity doesn't make that distinction. On his show, he was upset about the debt commission suggesting some cuts in military spending by 2015.

Here are the cuts that Hannity probably didn't read:

Apply the overhead savings Secretary Gates has promised to deficit reduction 28
Freeze federal salaries, bonuses, and other compensation at the Department of Defense for three years 5.3
Freeze noncombat military pay at 2011 levels for 3 years 9.2
Double Secretary Gates’ cuts to defense contracting 5.4
Reduce procurement by 15 percent 20
Reduce overseas bases by one-third 8.5
Modernize Tricare, Defense health 6
Replace military personnel performing commercial activities with civilians 5.4
Reduce spending on Research, Development, Test & Evaluation by 10 percent 7
Reduce spending on base support 2
Reduce spending on facilities maintenance 1.4
Consolidate the Department of Defense’s retail activities 0.8
Integrate children of military personnel into local schools in the United States 1.1

Weak sauce. Wait till Rand introduces his balanced budget.

To him they are one and the same. Rand will educate him. :)
