This is an email I received from Democracy (Socialism) for America. Emphasis is mine.

Jordan -

We knew this day was coming -- Today, the co-chairs of the Deficit
Commission declared war on Social Security.

And it's not just Social Security they're going after. They're declaring
war on Medicare, the National Park Service and PBS, too.

Well, the Deficit Commission doesn't speak for me -- or the vast majority
of Americans -- and Congress needs to know it. Join me today and sign our
pledge to Congress rejecting the Deficit Commission's right-wing attacks
on Social Security.
Add your name now

The Co-Chairs of the Commission released their proposal today. One member
of the commission referred to the plan as "a good start". It's our job to
make sure they know it's Dead on Arrival. Here's a quick sample of just
some of what they're calling for:

* Cut Social Security benefits
* Raise the retirement age
* Cut funding to the National Park Service
* Cut funding to PBS

When we say that the Deficit Commission doesn't speak for the vast
majority of Americans, we have the numbers to back it up.

On Election Day, Democracy for America polled voters nationwide and when
asked about Social Security only four percent supported making cuts to
Social Security. Over half support eliminating the Social Security tax cap
for income over $106,000 a year and 31 percent said they wouldn't change
anything at all.

Let me say that again so Congress gets the message -- We polled the exact
same people who voted to put Republicans in charge of the House of
Representatives and 85 percent of voters don't want any cuts to Social
Security.
This might be the only thing that 85 percent of Americans can agree on.
Help make sure Congress gets the message.

Call on Congress to reject the Deficit Commission's recommendations
now.

When we asked DFA members what we needed to work on after the election,
the answer was loud and clear -- Stand up for Social Security. And we are.

Join us today and tell Congress to reject the Deficit Commission.

Well, looks like Democratic operatives aren't willing to balance the budget by 2037. Maybe we can settle on 2054. :rolleyes:

Haha, why don't you respond by asking why they support funding National Parks that are essentially the US government squatting on lands that belong to the Lakota and other Amerind peoples by treaty?

Stuff like this pisses me off. Too many people have no idea how dire the situation is. It's either start cutting social security, or hyperinflate the currency in which case the social security checks won't pay for squat anyway.

I'm surprised this wasn't a bigger topic here. I just watched this on CBS News:
http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/11/10/politics/main7041460.shtml

CBS News Chief White House Correspondent Chip Reid reports that in the 50-page draft proposal, pain is everywhere:

• The federal workforce would be slashed by 10 percent, or 200,000 jobs;
• More than $100 billion in defense cuts;
• Farm subsidies cut by $3 billion per year.

On Social Security benefits would be reduced for higher incomes and the retirement age would gradually increase from 67 to 69.

Some taxes would be cut, including tax rates for the highest bracket of 35 percent could go as low as 23 percent. Corporate rates would go from 35 percent to as low as 26 percent. The alternative minimum tax intended for upper tax brackets and now hitting the middle class families would be eliminated.

I started it earlier today and the Mods moved the post to the Economics section. (I think it was more politics)

I moved it back.

Just ask a mod if you want a thread moved. Usually they will honor most non off-topic requests.

Well, the founding fathers never wanted this country to be a democracy. They were all about it being a Constitutional Republic. :)

The fools truly think they have leverage. There is no goddamn leverage!!! Either we amputate the arm now, and MAYBE you can live.

The day when it takes the entire 2010 US GDP to buy a cheeseburger at McDonalds will certainly be an odd one.

Yea, I know. It's just depressing that we don't live in one.
