They were until the early part of the 20th century.

Overreaching empire, discarding the policy of "Splendid Isolation" and the wars that followed it sealed the fate of the British empire.

So, wars, interventionism and the loss of the ability to engage in "free trade" at the barrel of a British gun, brought the empire down.
