Florida's first black Republican congressman credited the Tea Party with standing up against allegations of racism from the left in supporting his successful candidacy.

“So I think that the -- the liberal progressives saw the strength of the grass-roots movement that we call the Tea Party which stands for 'taxed enough already' and they tried to turn against it,” Rep.-elect Allen West (R-Fla.) said Friday on "Hannity" on Fox News.

“And the number one thing that you always try to do to silence an opponent in the United States of America is to call someone a racist.”

West said that attempts to tarnish the Tea Party did not foil his campaign. “And we see that that did not work whatsoever,” he said.

“Well, I think the most important thing with our race is that we ran on honor, integrity and character,” said West.

Another historic election took place in South Carolina, where Rep.-Elect Tim Scott also became the first black Republican congressman from his state since Reconstruction.

Scott said he grew up in a single-parent household, where he experienced “tough love.” He said the country needs to experience a similar idea. “And I think it's part of what we need in America today is we need to have an opportunity to experience tough love,” he said. “And that really means to limit the role of the government.”

The two new members will join a Republican majority in the House. West has announced that he will join the Congressional Black Caucus, saying he plans to join the Democratic-dominated bloc to challenge the CBC's "monolithic voice."

Why did West say he will join Congressional Black Caucus?
Because the Congressional Black Caucus is controlled by Progressive Democratic Socialists and he wants to challenge their power.

West, one of two black Republicans elected to Congress in Tuesday's election, said he plans to join the Democratic-dominated bloc, to challenge, in West word's, the CBC's "monolithic voice."

"I plan on joining, I'm not gonna ask for permission or whatever, I'm gonna find out when they meet and I will be a member of the Congressional Black Caucus and I think I meet all of the criteria and it's so important that we break down this 'monolithic voice' that continues to talk about victimization and dependency in the black community," West said on WOR radio.

An excerpt from Tom Ricks' 2006 book Fiasco alleges that former U.S. Army Lt. Col. Allen West -- a candidate for Congress in Broward and Palm Beach -- had to be told by a subordinate that the interrogation of an Iraqi detainee had gone too far.

For background on that August 2003 interrogation, check out this Juice post. West had had his soldiers haul in an Iraqi police officer suspected of having knowledge of a plot to assassinate West. In one of the many breaches of protocol, West interrogated the prisoner himself. He threatened to kill the prisoner. When soldiers' beating the prisoner didn't work, West himself a shot past the man's ear before a senior sergeant finally told him, "Sir, I don't think he knows."

In his own statements about the incident, West has claimed that the interrogation led to valuable intelligence, but that doesn't jibe with the account in Fiasco. Excerpt:

Allen West comes across like one of those generic "compassionate conservatives". I would much rather have Thomas Sowell in his position.
