Randy Altschuler’s campaign said late Friday that a recanvassing of votes in Suffolk County had put the Republican candidate ahead of Democratic Rep. Tim Bishop.
Bishop appeared to be the winner on Tuesday night and was projected as such by the Associated Press, with a lead of 3,400 votes and about 9,000 outstanding absentee ballots to be counted.
Rob Ryan, a spokesman for the Altschuler campaign, said Friday that the Republican candidate now has a 392 vote advantage. But it will likely take at least a week more to count the absentee ballots. (The tightening of the vote count was first reported by Politico.)
Bishop was one of a half-dozen congressional Democrats from New York who faced tough, well-funded competition for their seats. The other five Democratic incumbents all lost to Republican challengers on Tuesday.
