...and while he didn't make a lot of sense, he certainly came off anti-fiat currency and pro-commodity backed currency. I think he caught Colbert off-guard.

Yea, he was making an observation, and I wouldn't be surprised if he was a lefty. I've got my Dad into Ron Paul a bit and he's read some of his books. He'll agree with Paul on almost everything, but not when it comes to taking care of those who can't take care of themselves. I think a lot of baby boomers who grew up as lefties, no matter how much someone like Paul makes sense, they cannot disconnect themselves from the need for a social safety net.

Anyway, when you get a chance, watch the Colbert Report online tomorrow or catch a rerun, listen to what Costello tries to say. You know times are changing when a lefty-musician starts trying to talk about what backs a currency while plugging his new album.
