While the Republican gains in the House and Senate are grabbing the most headlines, the most significant results on Tuesday came in state legislatures where Republicans wiped the floor with Democrats.

Republicans picked up 680 seats in state legislatures, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures -- an all time high. To put that number in perspective: In the 1994 GOP wave, Republicans picked up 472 seats. The previous record was in the post-Watergate election of 1974, when Democrats picked up 628 seats.

The GOP gained majorities in at least 14 state house chambers. They now have unified control -- meaning both chambers -- of 26 state legislatures.

That control is a particularly bad sign for Democrats as they go into the redistricting process. If the GOP is effective in gerrymandering districts in many of these states, it could eventually lead to the GOP actually expanding its majority in 2012.

This should make it easier to pass things such as the Firearms Freedom Act.

State house pickups aren't really a great statistic b/c of the NH house.

This election has become the Republican version of the midterm elections back in 2006. It's just one cycle after another, with the same two powers exchanging seats. If the Republicans don't do anything to make our economy more prosperous, then voters will simply vote for Democrats to change things. Our electorate has short-term memory. I'm not too impressed.

Imagine if we could repeal the 17th amendment, GOP could have control of Senate.

Does anyone know how many states now have Republican majorities in their state legislatures? This really will make a huge difference because of the redistricting that will go on based on the 2010 census.

That means it is imperative to start grooming Ron Paul style Republicans to run for state offices en masse in the '12 and '14 election cycles. This is very likely the best chance we'll ever have to put Liberty minded candidates in office. If we slack off now, we'll end up with more of the same - neocons, statists and self-serving careerists. And we'll only have ourselves to blame.

I am so laughing that the census tactics are coming back to bite the Dem's. They thought they were going to re write the book.

Democrats have controlled the Minnesota House and Senate since 1974 (which was when they started running with party designation, but Democrats petty much controlled the legislature since Minnesota's inception), and now for the first time ever, Republicans have the majority in the House and Senate. It's kind of a big deal.

Democrats are throwing a shit-fit. The governor's race is very close, and it looks like there will be a recount. If the Republican (Emmer) somehow wins, well... it'll be interesting to watch. :D

Also of note, is Oberstar (18-term Democrat congressman since '74, chairman of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee) was upset by Chip Cravaack, who seems to be pretty libert-minded.
