WASHINGTON -- On Sunday, National Republican Senatorial Committee Chairman John Cornyn (Tex.) denied reports that the GOP is abandoning Joe Miller in Alaska's Senate race (http://blogs.abcnews.com/thenote/2010/10/republicans-counting-on-write-in-lisa-murkowski-over-joe-miller-in-alaska.html), but at the same time, refused to say whether he believes the Republican has a real shot at winning.

Cornyn was responding to a story by ABC News's Jonathan Karl, who reported that party leaders are worried that Democrat Scott McAdams may actually win and are therefore "banking on a victory by write-in candidate Lisa Murkowski as the best bet for Republicans to keep the Alaska Senate seat."

"Well, that's not the case," Cornyn responded on ABC's "This Week." " We, what we have done, we are supporting the nominee of our party, which is Mr. Miller, and -- but are concerned."

When asked by host Christiane Amanpour whether he believes Miller can win, Cornyn simply replied, "Well, I think that polls are very close now between Senator Murkowski and Joe Miller, and what we want to make sure of is that the Democrat doesn't win, Bob's candidate doesn't win in November."

In contrast, Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee Chairman Bob Menendez said, "We believe Scott McAdams has a real chance of winning this race."

NRSC issues statement (http://www.nrsc.org/nrsc-statement-on-alaska-senate-race) calling the report inaccurate, says they are backing Miller

They better be!

I got a strong feeling Murkowski is going to win....

Maybe they do too and are trying to make her feel welcome so she doesn't bolt the GOP?

No doubt that's why they didn't remove her chair position in the senate.

I am guessing it will be a tight three way race... I really, really hope Joe Miller pulls it off.

Did anybody ever win with a write in?

I want Miller to win but if not it is going to improve Rand's stature because he will be looked at as the reasonable teaparty candidate that can become a national leader.

Did anybody ever win with a write in?

Yes. Strom Thurmond won a statewide race for U.S. Senate in South Carolina in 1954 as a write-in candidate.

Ed Morrissey has an interesting analysis over at HotAir:

He thinks perhaps the NRSC is just sending some signals that they are behind Murkowski so she will remain a Republican if she manages to win. Meanwhile, they are attacking McAdams to make sure he comes in third and a GOP guarantee is guaranteed. Attacking Murkowski would help Miller AND McAdams.

If they don't back Miller they had better watch because no one will back the GOP anymore.
