Looks like MoveOn has been out in the open about their intentions..... Media coverage to offset lack of funds...

That seems to be a frequent problem for you.... :D

1. They posted on a blog (Sept 24th) they wanted to attack Rand Paul:
"MoveOn Attacking Rand Paul – You Can Help"

2. They wanted any tips on events Rand Paul would be at:
"If you find out about a Rand Paul event scheduled anywhere in Kentucky, e-mail YellaDog and he’ll let MoveOn know about it."

3. They detail their plan:
" MoveOn has begun a “bird-dogging” campaign designed to earn media coverage"

4. Reflect on news reports and past week, slowly.

In order to get coverage they were intending to make a scene. Just standing in a crowd is not going to get media attention. Hitting a candidate in the face will and even more so if your violent actions create a violent backlash. Edit the video and get it out fast with you spin.

i am definitely slow... make no mistake.

for example: i thought you were citing this as evidence that a physical attack was premeditated rather than just the publicity stunt being premeditated.

I can't run as fast as I used to either. :D

Perhaps that was their plan.

If all else fails, just rush him and someone will get video and we will be in the news... Sounds plausible to me.

I think what the blog shows is they were focused on causing enough chaos at Rand Paul related events to get media attention. Whether it was intended to be peaceful or not could depend on the activist and leaders, but they did bill it is as: MoveOn attacking Rand Paul..... :o

attacking as in how we organize via the internet to attack platform.

I don't like playing the same political theater bs that some of you seem to relish.

Do you like getting single digits in polls and on voting day?

But billing it as "attacking Rand Paul" and then physical doing it doesn't seem like any of our events (except snowballs at Sean, but that wasn't planned as "Hit Sean With Snow Balls on the internet).

The snowballs were spontaneous, no pre meditation at all.

Sign waves at events is far different from rushing someone's vehicle and practically bonking them in the face with a sign.

Ex-Paul volunteer pleads not guilty in stomping

By Jordan Fabian - 11/18/10 04:46 PM ET
A former Rand Paul volunteer pleaded not guilty to a misdemeanor assault charge Thursday stemming from an attack of a female liberal activist outside a Senate debate in Kentucky.

An attorney for Tim Profitt, 53, a former county campaign coordinator, said at a court hearing that his client was acting in defense of Paul (R), who won his election the following week.
"I'm sure he was doing at the time what he thought was necessary," defense attorney Michael Dean said, according to the Associated Press (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/18/AR2010111803544.html?hpid=moreheadlines).

The campaign of Paul's Democratic opponent Jack Conway sought to use the incident (http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/126059-conway-campaign-pauls-response-to-stomping-not-enough) to paint Paul as extreme in the final days of the campaign, but it was not enough to lift him over the hump.
The incident drew national attention after video emerged (http://thehill.com/blogs/blog-briefing-room/news/125785-moveon-activist-attacked-outside-rand-paul-rally) of a man, alleged to be Profitt, was shown to be stomping on the head of Lauren Valle, 23, an activist associated with MoveOn.

Profitt was dismissed as Bourbon County coordinator following the incident and Paul's campaign said that "violence of any kind has no place in our civil discourse."

This article takes it a little too far when it calls moveon.org a domestic terrorist organization.

Never forget how over the top the media was with this story in a last ditch effort to help Conway:

Operation Mockingbird in full effect. The video shows there was no head stomp. But the media keeps going with the "head stomp" meme.

That said, going forward we need to take steps to make sure that stuff like this doesn't happen again. If the police in general aren't going to do their job, we need to find off duty police officers in our own movement to do to it, as opposed to some well meaning, but unqualified volunteer with a bad back. There are a myriad of ways this woman could have been controlled better than the "foot on the shoulder" method. Also strategically we have to do a better job assessing threats. From what I understand we had ID'd these two as "MoveOn.org" operatives. That takes them out of the "Sirhan Sirhan about to shoot Bobby Kennedy" category and more into the "Groucho Marx pie in the face" category. In other words, their only weapon was to try to provoke the crowd to do something stupid and that's what they did. Also the campaign should have been on top of the story sooner to prevent the leftwing media from being able to frame the debate. I know this is all 20/20 hindsight, but these same tactics will be used in the future since they were moderately successful this time. Sure Rand won in KY, but this is a national movement.

That SOMEBODY had id'd them as something doesn't mean the whole crowd seeing her shove hard plastic into Rand's face through the window of a moving car knew. Also, her action at minimum showed she didn't CARE if she put his eye out.

But I think the off duty police would be a good idea. Better, if we have a well funded campaign, would be private security for crowd control, with a contract and separate responsibility. The problem is, this is all grass roots and the teamsters and move on came in from out of state late in the game and people didn't have a 'strategy'. Police clearly ignored the matter. No one knew how much they would devote to this race even though they lost it months ago. They couldn't bear having Rand seem popular.

Also, pie in the face when you are walking into the final debate is pretty bad, and battery. Surely they shouldn't have to allow that. Restraint by itself was ok, I think. That is why no one else was arrested.
