GOP Won't Choose Pro-Choice Candidate, Brownback Says

(CNSNews.com) - Sen. Sam Brownback of Kansas, who reportedly plans to drop out of the Republican presidential race, was asked on Friday if he would support a pro-choice candidate such as Rudy Giuliani.
Yes he would, the staunchly pro-life Brownback told Cybercast News Service -- if Giuliani is the Republican presidential nominee.
But it's not going to happen, Brownback said: "He is not going to be the nominee. The party is not going to nominate a pro-choice candidate. It is a pro-life party with a pro-choice wing," Brownback told Cybercast News Service.
What if it does happen, the conservative senator was asked.
"It is not going to happen...it's just not going to happen," Brownback insisted.
Brownback has campaigned on his pro-life credentials, launching what he called a "Pro-Life, Whole Life tour" earlier this summer.
In the Senate, he has sponsored a number of pro-life bills, most recently, a bill that would require doctors to perform an ultrasound and share the results with women before performing an abortion.
Brownback is one of many conservative leaders attending a three-day Value Voters Summit in Washington. The meeting, which began on Friday, is hosted by the Family Research Council, and it includes most of the Republican presidential hopefuls.
Brownback's campaign said the senator will hold a press conference in Topeka, Kan., on Friday afternoon -- apparently to announce his departure from the presidential race.
