This is a blog entry from the father of Erik Scott, the innocent citizen killed by Las Vegas Metro Police in front of Costco. It appears that if you put an Erik Scott Memorial ribbon magnet on your vehicle, you increase your chance of being followed and getting a frivolous ticket.
Samantha, Erik Scott's girlfriend, witnessed Erik being shot to death on July 10th at the Summerlin Costco in Las Vegas, Nevada. She was severely traumatized, and is struggling to rebuild her shattered life.
Unfortunately, Las Vegas-area cops are prolonging Samantha's pain, apparently in the name of demonstrating solidarity for the air-tight "Blue Brotherhood" — or, in Southern Nevada, the Brown Brotherhood, given the tan uniforms police officers wear.
For years, Samantha had a spotless traffic record with no tickets. Until recently, that is. Within a span of three weeks, she's received three moving-violation tickets. Two for not clearing an intersection, before the traffic light turned red, and one for going 40 mph. in a 35 mph. zone. In all three cases, she was matching the flow of traffic, surrounded by other drivers doing exactly the same thing. Two of those tickets were given within a few blocks of her home in Henderson, by Henderson cops. The third was written by a Metro officer near Samantha's workplace in Vegas.
Charges to date? About $600 in fines, which she cannot afford to pay.
Either Samantha became an unlawful, careless driver overnight, or she's being harassed by Las Vegas Metro and Henderson cops. Why would she be singled out, when others were driving exactly the same way, at the same time and place? Because Samantha had the gall to display a magnetic Erik Scott memorial ribbon on her car's trunk. After getting the second ticket, she moved the ribbon to the right side of her car — and the third officer that stopped her was initially on that side.
Samantha isn't alone, either. Another of Erik's friends was ticketed for "rolling through a stop sign" as she left the candlelight vigil for Erik in August. One of Erik's closest friends and coworkers was followed all the way home one night by a Metro cop. Other supporters have been followed for miles by Metro cruisers, which departed, when the driver arrived at work.
The common elements: All have Erik Scott memorial ribbons on their cars. All live and work in the Las Vegas area.
