What is to keep a whole group of Democrats from setting up a not for profit organization with the sole purpose of caring and giving to the less fortunate. Providing food, shelter, healthcare and so on?
If this is the consensus of the Democrat party that these things should be provided then why not provide them?
Why should everyone be forced to contribute? They should take matters into their own hands and provide these things and feel the sense of pride associated with their generosity.

It's not all about caring for the poor. It's the hatred of the rich and the ridiculous notion that "everybody needs to pay their fair share, and the rich don't pay their fair share." The top 5% pay disproportionately-much-more than their fair share.

If their main goal was just about helping poor people, they would be less aggressive. What they truly want is to fulfill their vision of how the world should work, meaning significant reduction in economic freedom. They believe the economy and money are too important to just allow greedy and free people participate in voluntary actions.

Torchbearer said it well. They want the other guy to pay for services and charities that they want. I have met many liberals who spend not a dime of their own money nor donate any of their time to anything other than their own selfish wants.Generally speaking they don't understand economics or the fact that the reason that wealth exists in this country is because people felt there was a personal benefit to be derived from creating it. If you take the wealth they create they will stop creating it.

It's the most simple thing that liberals do not understand. Human action is logical, people act because it benefits them. If you forcibly rob them they will see no benefit it acting in a economically beneficial way. To top this off they don't understand how trade is always mutually beneficial. Same principle if it was not mutually beneficial neither party would engage in trade voluntarily.

The problem is they're not generous. The whole point is to make someone else pay for these things.

The kind of generous people you just described are not Democrats. They're Republicans.
