Britain Shrinks Government With Big Spending Cuts
About 500,000 public sector jobs could go

(Newser) – We already knew they were scrapping the harrier jet, but Britain's new spending cuts go much, much further than that: the government announced reductions of an average of 19% across all departments, the Christian Science Monitor reports. They add up to about $128 billion in cuts. Big hits were made to social welfare programs—with the exception of the National Health Service—and the retirement age was raised from 65 to 66. About 500,000 public-sector jobs may be cut, notes AP.

They havn't exactly made the cuts yet. They are only proposing them and their deficit is still at the 10% of gdp level. My guess is that they will still be spending and that the cuts won't end up happening.

After that they still have a deficit running 10% of GDP? They better make much bigger cuts than this lmao. Let's start with 95% across the board :p (That's me compromising on 100%)

I hope for the sake of England they do this and keep cutting until some semblance of sanity returns. It does not matter cuts are coming voluntarily or involuntarily.

They won't cut jobs. They'll just terrify the loafers and the leech gov employees into begging for more taxes.

1 in 12 government workers eliminated. And the money they send to every family with a kid will stop going to the wealthy.

Um they should stop sending money to anyone. Why people feel it is their right to force people who do not have children to subsidize who do is beyond me.

The problem is that spending and debt is still going up in real numbers. It's just that the breaks take time to stop the runaway train.

The major problem to reform is that the media, institutions etc in Britain are run by the fabians i.e. socialists. The Conservatives can only do so much before the fabian rulers demonise them to the point of never winning another election.

Expect France-style riots if this goes through.

Good for England. I hope this happens in America too. Scrap the barnacles off the ship of state.
