From what little I've seen, he's a better candidate than Cuomo or Paladino, though I'd vote Libertarian if I was still living in NY.

What the heck is the criteria for getting a "Party" on the ballot in NY? How did this guy get on there?

Yeah, the media here pretty much lumped both the Green and Libertarian party candidates into the "fringe" group, as they only focused on the 2 major party candidates in their news reports. It really pissed me off because I thought Redlich (although a bit uptight at first) came across with the best platform. But Cuomo is going to get in easily as New Yorkers continue to vote the same way and expect to get different results.

Locally, people complained that it was more like a freak show than a serious debate but I think this is the way we ought to have debates - preview all the candidates on the ballot so voters get to hear from them all. Personally, I'd like to see 2 live debates. The first one with all the candidates and then have the people vote who they thought came in first, second, third, etc. From that list, bring back the top 3 or 4 vote getters for a final debate so that there is more time for more questions and answers.

He got 15,000 petition signatures in an independent petition drive, like all the third parties did that shared the stage at the debate. In NY if you run as an independent, you have to name the title of the party you are running on. Under state law, the 'party' is just a political committee until it gets 50,000+ votes in the Governor's race, whereupon it obtains 'permanent' ballot status in NY (i.e., the party can run candidates without a huge independent petition drive, can be listed on the voter registration forms, and can run its own primaries for four years). So for lines that don't have 'permanent' ballot status, the realistic goal is to get 1-1.5% of the vote in the Gubernatorial election.

Up here in New York State, we don't own property but merely rent it from the government. In that respect, I agree with Jimmy, THE RENT IS TOO DAMN HIGH!!!
